Let us look at the following Verses in the Bible: "If a man takes a wife and, after laying with her, dislikes her and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, 'I married this woman but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,' then the girl's father and mother shall bring proof [how do you think they would do that?] that she was a virgin to the town elders at the gate. The girl's father will say to the elders, 'I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. Now he has slandered her and said, 'I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.' But here is the proof of my daughter's virginity.' Then her parents shall display the cloth [the father would literally stick his two fingers covered with a piece of cloth into his daughter's vagina before she gets married and keep that bloody cloth for as long as his daughter is married] with before the elders of the town, and the elders shall take the man and punish him. (From the NIV Bible, Deuteronomy 22:13-18)"

Here is a more clear translation from Hebrew Resources: "The girl's father and mother shall produce the evidence of the girl's virginity before the elders of the town at the gate. And the girl's father shall say to the elders, "I gave this man my daughter to wife, but he had taken an aversion to her; so he has made up charges, saying, 'I did not find your daughter a virgin.' But here is the evidence of my daughter's virginity!" And they shall spread out the cloth before the elders of the town. (From the New JPS translation, Deuteronomy 22:15-17)"

The New JPS translation of Deuteronomy 22:15-17 makes it even more clear about having the parents of the girl displaying the bloody piece of cloth before the elders of the town.

According to the Talmud, the cloth should be "A cloth of less than 3 square finger-breadths. (From the Talmud, Eruvin 29b-30a and Succah 16a)", and before it is being used, it should be "soft, woolen and clean. (From the Talmud, Niddah 17a)"

that father should be taken to metal home for treatment. Better still, he should be taken to a prayer house for prayers.

well just means the proof would be her period cause if she's married and the man doesn't believe she's a virgin and has sex with her and announces that, there's no way to find out ever cause she already lost her virginity to him... So the proof would be her period...

Thats all the verse was saying and men were taken on there word back then and women didn't have Authority at all so the mother would have been beside the Father, Father would have been the only one to protect his daughter from being falsely accused, back then men would stone women. Women had no rights not even to speak up for themselves the father would of had to if the husband was betraying his wife by implying she was untrue or a liar.

Nothing in rabbinical writing suggest that the father was to stick his fingers into his own daughter. Virginity was so highly regarded that the Hebrews took great care to provide that evidence. A father sticking his fingers in could easily break the Hyman as well and thus would not be practiced ever.

Keep in mind that although bazaar as this practice may be to us, this was done to protect "this girl" from a piece of crap husband who could lie to just get rid of her.

This practice also kept sexual diseases from spreading.

First off thats totally fu*ked up. Second there is no way to tell if a female is a virgin simply cos some females are born with out a hymen other are born with one but they can tear for any number of reasons including exericise. Plus not to mention the fact that not all girls bleed when loosing their virginty.
I have a bible but have not read it since I was like 5 years old and only read bits and peices then. I havent heard that one before but im sure you are correct but its still fu*ked up if you ask me.

I agree that this is a sick practice, but you're a little off about the meaning of the cloth.

The bride's family would cut and keep a piece of the bedsheet from the honeymoon bed, which would be stained with blood when the hymen was broken during intercourse. This practice is still common in some areas of the middle east and Mediterranean.

As long as the girl is not married to an old man with another three wives like some Muslims, its ok. I think some Muslims husbands are too old enough to get their penis straight to test the virginity of the teenaged bride. Take the head of out of your own **** man.

Do you know why there are many, many, many different kinds of denominations e.g. (Adventists, Baptists, Church of God, Church of Christ, Lutherans, Mennonites, Methodists), just to name a few ? It is because of people like you who will pick certain verses and say, "I believe that the (verses) are saying this and the rest of them are wrong in their interpretations. Oh, and another thing the Old Testament is Hebrew history. Nothing more, nothing less.
