Embossed means that the writing is actually raised from the surface of the paper/card it is printed on (like the numbers and name on the front of a credit card).

Unembossed means it is just plain printed (like the writing in a book or a newspaper).

Embossed--the characters or images raised in relief above the surface of the paper, plastic, etc. This is used for credit card numbers and often found on greeting cards.

Unembossed--Flat characters or images (normal flat print).
