it's not third world!! tap water is drinkable !! i don't know how are lows in US but in Italy ALL tap water MUST BE drinkable!!
there are also fountain around streets where you can drink water!! a thing that is unknown everywhere else...
you must not drink water just if there is written "non potabile" (not drinkable)..

Tap water in Italy is absolutely safe!! It is an old American urban legend that it is not and I am a bit surprised this myth still survives today, honestly! I'm American but have been living in Italy for years and have always drunk tap water. Some of it still comes directly from mountain springs and runs in the ancient Roman acquaducts! People, it is definitely safe to drink!!! And bottled water sold around the tourist sites is sold at outrageous prices because they bank on this old and unfounded fear.

You can everywhere unless the place you go to (the hotel or the restaurant) doesn't have an owned well which may not be controlled...but they'll tell you not to drink it!!!
It is usually more healthy than bottled water since the latter may stay under the sun for a long time losing its properties...
Tap water is controlled. And a sure choice!!!!

Yes, it's perfectly safe to drink. How it will taste really depends more on the building pipes it's coming from. If you're traveling to Italy and think it will give you problems, bring some Immodium AD. You won't be able to avoid it - you have to brush your teeth and food you eat in restaurants will have been washed in tap water.

Like most people have said, it is perfectly safe to drink (unless it is marked as not being drinking water). Are you drinking in bars and restaurants etc? Where do you think the ice comes from?!
The taste varies from place to place, of course; if you don't like it, buy bottled mineral water.

YES, although in some places they have started to add chlorine. However, in others the water comes from springs - which can be deliciously fresh and crystal clear or with salts and minerals in it.
Try tap water in each place you go, if you like it drink it, if not buy bottles.

Drinking water from the local supply can be risky anywhere in the world. You will probably not have a problem anywhere in the civilized world but the dangers are there. Last year my city found a dead skunk in one of our holding tanks. I live in the US.

sure you can! when we were there i drank from the tap in our villa and out in the public fountains. but, i wouldnt recommend it if you dont normally drink tap water at home. it does have a different taste, but nothing nasty. if anything, drink from the public fountains, it is so refreshing!

I've heard it advised always drink bottled water aboard. In Britain you can drink it though, even if it does poison you over time, with a cocktail of chemicals and fluoride
