Great question.
The role of today's church is the same as it's always been: to spread the good news of Jesus Christ and to help develop those who profess to follow Christ's ways.
Unfortunately, that's not the role the church has taken. Today's church is more concerned with wealth and competing with secular systems than bringing ppl to Christ. It's all prophesied in the book of Relevation. The last church (the church of Laodicea) thought they were wealthy and rich and knew everything, but in fact they were "wretched, miserable and blind" as Jesus put it. And, for the first time in history, Jesus was standing outside of the church, and appealing to the individual believer, instead of through the organization of the church.
So, in that light, the church is much more now so individual Christians who are spreading the word, love & peace of God through their actions and through their deeds.

Is the Christian Church obeying the command of Christ to make disciples of every nation or are too many in it using the comfort of God's grace to justify spiritual lethargy -- while the world goes to hell? Has the Christian Church become a social club, a place for babysitting, and a new found tolerance with a weakened gospel? Is the Christian Church doing what God has told it to do? "Judgment begins in the house of the Lord,"
(1 Peter 4:17).

To help to achieve peace, on an individual level. The only way to restore peace worldwide, is to make every single person yearn for it. And that means, one at a time.
