The christian bible was written by guys who didn't know China existed. Church dogma kept people thinking that the earth was the center of the solar system. So, of course, the universe is too big for them to contemplate.
And no, we are not alone. Once we know how to look for it, I believe that we'll find life everywhere.

Fear, most of the religious are afraid that if something else comes along it will discount their beliefs. Or at least upset large parts. The life that is probably out there is also probably smarter and has more figured out.
The probability that there is other life in the universe is good. Look at the number of suns, and associated planets, then do the math.

I don't know if we're alone or not, but isn't it just enough to try to live on the one world that we're in and deal with the issues that we have here?
I believe that religion micro-manages us a bit, so that we have forced to deal with the real things that we have in front of us. i don't see how needful it would be for us to believe in aliens if we have no proof of their existence and no way to get there to be with them.

Because religion is not based on reality - religion is a psychological crutch for the gullible, ignorant and weak-minded.
