Its all to do with the belt line. If a boxer wears large shorts then he can pull them up his stomach higher meaning his opponent has a smaller area to punch at. If he goes "below the belt" of his shorts then he will be penalised.

The large shorts keep them warm - it can get cold in the ring, they are there to wipe the dust off the gloves on, if the fighter goes down and then gets up, and the boxers wear a protector for their nads, which is very bulky, so a tight pair of Speedos would hardly cover it.

it is out of the reulations to hit a boxer belo his shorts and so boxers wear such massive shorts to give their opponents a smaller target area.

its just a style of clothing at the mo, putting tassles on makes a fighter look good when they box and land big punches. look at hattons shorts they are massive and his last oponent colazzo tried to go one better to sway the judges with longer tassles. it dosn`t matter how long they are because you can`t punch below the belt.

boxes arnt as stupis as they look or sound. The bigger the shorts the smaller the punching zone. ...self protection i guess..huh.
