Iran will eventually back down. At the moment it's all rhetoric but Iran realises that if their nuclear facility ever got close to completion Israel (for its own protection) would have to take it out. In the meantime the Iranian government are seen, in the Arab world, to be standing up to the West and the UN. At the same time they are talking to the UN, Russia, China and the EU regarding assistance with a nuclear energy programme. The chances are that they will be offered a deal that they can present to their people as a victory.

The twenties-generation in Iran has had a view of the modern world; they have tasted modern benefits and they like them.
That is the generation that will make the crucial decisions not only for Iran but also for other middle-eastern countries.
Why should that generation go to war for any other reason than because their country is under attack and thousands of their fellow citizens are being killed?
I believe that group of Iranians will opt for peaceful relations with the rest of the world and Iran, with its large store of oil, will become a rich and modern nation.

My best guess: There will be a comprise of sorts, but Iran will maintain the upper hand and do what it wants to do. The west will impose some sanctions that won't work with Iran anymore than it works against anyone else, and will probably make them dig their heels in even more. And we, the west, will make our own public statements that try to save face. We don't have much choice, and a military option - while a very bold idea and an interesting fantasy to have, tends to not go very well for even the West (the good guys).

I dont see anyway this crisis would end peacefully. Iran would never give up its nuclear ambition, unless it is forced to do so.
They would be frightened by what happened to Saddam. He was lured into negotiating his big gun project and later when Americans knew he didnt have any weapon left to threaten their soldiers, they went in and raided his country. He was caught in the most embarrasing manner any head of state of his calibre could be caught. He would have been better-off dead than to be caught alive in a cave like a rat.

I can see this going in the same direction as Iraq. Oil fields will be secured, the cities and infrastructures will be left to crumble into death, anarchy and chaos.
