Unfortunatelly, it's not enough just to believe in Jesus as the savior to go to heaven.
If you keep on reading Matthew, you'll find the answer to your question there..
Mat.19:16-24
16 Behold, one came to him and said, "Good teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?"
17 He said to him, " Why do you call me good? No one is good but one, that is, God. BUT IF YOU WANT TO ENTER INTO LIFE, KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS."
18 He said to him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "'You shall not murder.''You shall not commit adultery.''You shall not steal.''You shall not offer false testimony.'
19 'Honor your father and mother.' And,'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"
20 The young man said to him, "All these things I have observed from my youth. What do I still lack?"
21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."
22 But when the young man heard the saying, he went away sad, for he was one who had great possessions.
23 Jesus said to his disciples, "Most certainly I say to you, a rich man will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven with difficulty.
24 Again I tell you, it is EASIER for a CAMEL to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God."
So you see, Jesus Himself already said it. You have to keep the Commandments. It's not enough only to believe Him.
And Jeus said again in John 8:51..
"Most certainly, I tell you, if a person KEEPS MY WORD, he will NEVER see death."
So I hope this could answer your question :) There are many more verses in the Bible which support the ones I gave you. Just pray to the Lord to give you guidance to find and to understand it.. you'll find ALL answers to your questions there.
Have a nice Sunday, and God bless you ;-)

By saying this, Jesus was implying that we should be true from the heart. We oughta be sincere in what we're saying. Remember the saying 'Practice what you preach'. Many people will acknowledge Christ with their lips and then they walk out and deny Him by the way they live.
You have to believe in Jesus to enter His Kingdom. Believing in Him means believing what He says. Won't you obey the one you love? The same principle goes here.
And it's not by your own efforts that you will be saved. God sees and knows everything. He's gonna save you, if you're really yearning for it. He tells us about the 'beginning' (the saving part) and the 'end' (the resting part) but he doesn't tell us about the 'in between'. That's where most of us Christians backslide. That's where we gotta figure out what to do and what to choose Reading the Bible regularly will teach us a lot and help us overcome all obstacles. The Bible is the Word of God. So what if there are several controversies about it right now, it still teaches people to be good! And something within us (maybe just our conscience) pricks our mind everytime we do something not-right. The Bible is the mind's complementary.
Now this is just one guy's opinion and I'm no expert at these things. Try some more sources and some expert advice. Hope you'll get what you're searching for. know you will.

You quoted Matthew 7:21 and you need to include verses 22 and 23 to understand what Jesus was talking about.
He is talking about when you (on that day) will be standing before the Lord thinking that you have done good and should enter the kingdom of heaven.
I think he was saying don't be like the scribes and publicans.
Verse 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name ? and in thy name have cast out devils ? and in thy name done many wonderful works ?
Verse 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
I believe that if you are a believer of Jesus, you will do the opposite of the hypocrites who seek the glory of men.

Jesus always distanced himself from being called God. Remember he insists to the travelers - "no one is perfect other than God".
The message here is - live according to the will of God (earlier pronounced thro Moses and misinterpreted) and later explained by Jesus - that is to treat others in the manner you want to be treated.
The comandments were taken in letter rather than the spirit and substance. I'll give you an example. God said to moses "Thou shall not kill" but we interpreted it to suit our convienience and gave meaning like - "not to kill humans". But the explanation of Jesus fits here. You dont want to be killed by anyone so dont do this to anyone. Another example - one of the comandments condemns adultry. Jesus declares - a mere sight with lustful intention is enough and is construed as adultry.
Jesus warns that there is no use in calling him if we do not follow the will (command) of God. Because he is concerned more on the will of Lord (that is his mission and message) and not on he himself being merely adored. Think I explained it.

There are two messages in the passage you mentioned (complete passage being Matthew 7: 21-23):
- The first message here is that not everyone you see that declares themselves to be Christians are actually Christian in the sense that they are one with Christ. There are many denominations that claim to be Christian, and because they have a religious structure, it can be deceiving for many that they think that just following that structure will result in salvation. Rather, one must be clear and honestly receive the salvation that Christ paid for on the cross; and by receiving that salvation, and not just following the structure of religiosity, will you be known to Christ, as opposed to those that do all the religious things (v. 22) and are yet unknown to Christ (v. 23) because they do not have a personal relationship to Him. This can also apply to those who are maliciously using the Name of God for personal gain or are causing harm to His Word, and they can actually be delusional to believe that they are doing the will of God, but this passage is ample warning to them.
- The second message applies more personally to Christians in the way that it refers to their standing in the Millenial Kingdom. If you are familiar with the Book of Revelation, you will see that before the New Heaven and the New Earth (Revelation 21 and 22), which is the beginning of eternity for all who receive salvation, there is a Millenial Kingdom (Revelation 20) where Satan is initially bound and the saints reign with Christ for a thousand years (verses 4-6). Verse six indicates that this millenial kingdom is not for all believers, for there will be believers who will not be found worthy of this reward. In fact, every parable in the Four Gospels that speaks of the Kingdom of Heaven, especially those that have the passage "where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth" for those not worthy, refer to this Millenial Kingdom rather than our salvation, which is already assured. "Weeping and gnashing of teeth" is not a response to punishment, but is a response of regret for not being able to partake of the Kingdom. It is for this reason that Paul constantly mentions "the race", that he may "press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3: 14) The receipt of salvation is not only the end of sin's hold, but is also the beginning of Christian living and a relationship with Christ, as well as the beginning of a race to receive the reward of the Millenial Kingdom.

After adam and eve everyone born on the face of this earth past, present and future was born with a sin nature. Therefore humanity was doomed until Christ died on the cross for the remission of our sins. When He died He broke the bondage of hell by making it possible for us to enter heaven by believing in His deity and and resurrection. When one believes He is Lord and He was raised from the dead he is saved. The only way. You cant go on deeds; God only sees the spirit that is in you when you accept Jesus as your Lord and personal savior. And children as well because they are not of age to make that decision. Hope this helps you and others!

There are different meanings to the word "believe". It can mean 'give mental assent to, eg I believe that democracy is a good form of government. It can mean 'put your faith and trust in' eg I believe in Jesus.
So, is it enough to just believe? An unequivical NO! The Bible also tells us that "Satan believes" . Guess what? Satan is not saved and is not going to Heaven.
Just as Jesus said, "You must be born again". When you are born again you get the nature of your father, God. When you have His nature and show it, because of death and rebirth, you get to go to heaven.
Jesus gave us two commandments "Love God. Love others". Do these and you will fulfill all the rest.

Maybe if you read Revelation 2 and 3, you will see what Jesus is saying to the congregations.
John 4:24 God is a spirit and those worshiping him, must worship with spirit and truth.
Praise Jah!! Hail earth's new King Jesus!! Welcome his wife, the 'Queen of the heavens'!!

There were people in jesus time just like now who claimed to be Christians but were not. If you accept Jesus as your Lord, you recieve the Holy Spirit who will guide you through life into Heaven. The will of God isn't forced on you, the Holy Spirit helps you to choose things that are pleasing to God. When your angry and ready to slap someone, the Holy Spirit whispers,"hey, take it easy, the hit you because..." It is impossible for us to please God in our human nature, the Holy Spirit helps us to be more loving, more forgiving, more pleasing to God and in the process, more in line with God's will
