I´m a german native speaker and I´m always wondering about the variety of words you have in english for a single german word...the german word is "schwül"...it means that it´s warm but the humidity is insufferably high..and i found a lot of english words for that..can you tell me the difference?? THX

Well, I'm sultry, the weather outside is muggy, a fascist regime is oppressive, that gum I stepped in is sticky and the thundery would normally refer to donner and blitzen. But you have many words in German that we don;t even have words for in English - there is no direct translation of 'schmachtend'!

if its definations on the weather which the british in general do seem to have a morbid fascination with i have never heard sultry being used to describe the weather or indeed oppressive. however muggy is overcast and dull, sticky is warm overcast and dull and thundery is warm overcast dull with heavy black clouds. example, "i say old chap, its rather sticky today, yep govner shut the fack up an giz yer watch and wallet"<<<

i'd say muggy would be best to describe it. if you type the words into www.dictionary.com you can get complete definitions of each, and decide which is more suitable for yourself. thundery isn't really what you mean though. hope this helps xx
