No, it is absolutely not essential. Here's why:
--College campuses are like little worlds in miniature, and businesses set up shop nearby just to cater to college kids. Everything is a very short walk or bus ride away.
--College is a place where a lot of people have cars. If you want to go someplace special, you can always find someone to bum a ride from.
--College campuses are set up to be "student friendly" and usually offer shuttles, walking paths, bike paths, and all sorts of other stuff to facilitate moving from one place to another.
--It costs more to insure a car that is parked regularly on a college campus. I don't know about your son's college, but I have never seen a college where break-ins and accidents didn't happen to cars on a regular basis.
The only way I can see a vehicle being an "essential" back to school accessory is if he lives at home and has to commute daily, or if you live less than a couple of hours away, and you would like him to come home regularly on weekends. Since you stated that he's living in dorms, that's out as a possibility. And if you get him a car because you want him to come home regularly, that's great and generous of you, but don't be surprised if you find visits becoming less and less frequent. There's just always something more interesting to do than go home to see the family for the weekend.
So skip the car. Bank the money in a high-yield account, instead, and give him a really nice graduation gift when he's done with college. Or even better, take your wife to someplace really nice and celebrate that another chick has left the nest :)

It depends on how you see it.
He is young and probably enjoying his teens. He may not be traveling too far but may need the car for some outings, improve his social standing and to further his dating prospects.
We all have our desires don't we. He has his too. If you don't give him a car he will probably buy his own once he starts working. Loll.
It finally boils down to whether mom and dad can afford or is willing to fulfills baby boys desires. Loll !

That depends on where the college is. If the college is in a city and get get around without a car, then no. But if the college is out in the country somewhere, then it would be helpful.

Alright, your hearing this from a college student herself and the answer is NO. I bought a car myself right before college began, ended up not taking it with me to school and its taught me a lot. I certainly don't have to deal with a lot of crap, such as, gas, insurance, drunk driving. If anything..... if your son reallllllyyyy wants a car for college, why can't he work for it himself? Am I wrong in saying that?

Yes. You don't need a girlfriend to enjoy life. It'd probably be easier to do college without a girlfriend. You need to put a lot of time into your studies.

No...give him a decent bicycle or maybe a scooter....
He has plenty of buddies who already have cars...otherwise he will be the one to be "used" by his buddies. It is expensive to keep a car, insurance for young people is horrendous. He is close to campus, and everything he needs is close-by. You all need to save your money and not waste it on car payments and insurance costs...College is expensive enough as it is.

No, most college campuses don't have enough parking space anyway. Some schools don't allow dorm residents to park on campus.

Give your son a car, is that what you said. If the kid wants a car let him buy one himself. What makes you think that you should give him a car?

Parents should never give kids a car. If they work and pay for it themselves they will look after it better
