this is the information i found on chicken gunya...it sounds like it's a viral infection spread by mosquitoes...as far as prevention, i'm guessing bug spray and avoiding stagnent water....hope this helps

The Tamil Nadu government was taking "all steps" to control the spread of chikun-gunya (chicken fever), a viral infection reported in 17 districts of the state, Health Minister K K S S R Ramachandran said Wednesday.

Ramachandran said the blood samples of patients complaining of fever and pain in the head, body and knee joints were sent to the National Virus Laboratory in Pune which confirmed that the disease was chicken-gunya adding that 10,908 people have been affected by it in Tamil Nadu.

He claimed there were no reports of death due to the disease, which is a viral infection causing fever and headache. The disease would not cause death, but would affect normal functioning of the patient for 10 to 15 days, he added.

Answering a query on the cause of the disease, he said it spread from those affected to the others through mosquitoes breeding in stagnant water. The state government was taking measures with the help of the local body authorities to keep the environment clean.

The patients recover after receiving treatment for two to five days. In some cases, the pain in the knee joints would continue for a few months.

Chikungunya is a relatively rare form of viral fever caused by an alphavirus that is spread by mosquito bites from the Aedes aegypti mosquito, though recent research by the Pasteur Institute in Paris claims the virus has suffered a mutation that enables it to be transmitted by Aedes Albopictus (Tiger mosquito). This was the cause of the actual plague in the Indian Ocean and a threat to the mediterranean coast at present, requiring urgent meetings of health officials of France, Italy and Spain, but nothing seems to be moving that way.

The name is derived from the Makonde word meaning "that which bends up" in reference to the stooped posture developed as a result of the arthritic symptoms of the disease. The disease was first described by Marion Robinson[1] and W.H.R. Lumsden[2] in 1955, following an outbreak on the Makonde Plateau, along the border between Tanganyika and Mozambique, in 1952. Chikungunya is closely related to O'nyong'nyong virus[3].

Chikungunya is not considered to be fatal. However, in 2005-2006, 200 deaths have been associated with chikungunya on Réunion island and a widespread outbreak in Southern India (especially in Tamil Nadu,Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh); see Recent outbreaks below. Tamil Nadu reportedly had the largest number of cases, as of July 2006, specifically centered around the southern districts of Madurai and Tirunelveli, with the number of reported cases increasing greatly in Salem,Chennai and Chengalpattu districts.

Chikungunya fever is a viral disease transmitted to humans by the bite of infected mosquitoes.

The best way to avoid CHIKV infection is to prevent mosquito bites. There is no vaccine or preventive drug. Prevention tips are similar to those for dengue or West Nile virus:

Use insect repellent containing an DEET or another EPA-registered active ingredient on exposed skin. Always follow the directions on the package.
Wear long sleeves and pants (ideally treat clothes with permethrin or another repellent).
Have secure screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.
Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets and barrels. Change the water in pet dishes and replace the water in bird baths weekly. Drill holes in tire swings so water drains out. Keep children's wading pools empty and on their sides when they aren't being used.
Additionally, a person with chikungunya fever or dengue should limit their exposure to mosquito bites in order to avoid further spreading the infection. The person should stay indoors or under a mosquito net.
