It really does sound like "Kennel Cough".Lots of different types of Kennel Cough, and not all covered by routine vaccinations.
Kennel Cough is highly contagious so please keep him away from other dogs.As long as the condition does not get worse he should lose the symptoms within 6 weeks.Usually there is no Veterinary treatment, but if you are worried, or if you think he may have a foreign body in his throat, take him to the Vet.
If you live in Britain, there is no need to worry about Heart worm,
it hasn't hit Britain yet.

He could have Kennel Cough. Take him to the Vet.

Kennel Cough can be caught easily from other dogs in the same way we can catch colds and 'flu.

Some dogs just have the dry cough as if they have something stuck in their throats and then they recover. BUT it can develop into a serious throat and/or chest infection and young dogs, like yours, are vulnerable as are old dogs.

If it is Kennel Cough he shouldn't be mixing with other dogs as he could pass on the infection so you need a diagnosis.

There is also the possibility that he really does have something in his throat like a small splinter. You need the Vet to check that out as well because it could lead to a throat infection.

My Jack Russell is 12 and she has had this all her life. We have taken her to the vet about it a few times and they can't find anything wrong with her. The told us that she just has a very sensitive larynx which gets easily irritated by her collar, dust, petting around her neck etc.

We don't keep a collar on her in the house, and use a harness to attach her lead onto (which goes over her shoulders and back so the lead does not pull on her throat). Apart from that we just try to avoid touching her round her throat. she sometimes gets it if she's in a dusty area or in a field with a lot of pollen etc.

You may find its the same thing with your pup. I used to worry about it all the time when we first got my JR but she's 12 now and very healthy, doing very well, it just seems to be that her throat is more sensitive than average.

I would take him to the vet right away. There is a parasite that makes a cough like that. I can't quite remember which one. I want to say heartworm but I don't think it's that. There are several things that can cause that and I would take him in RIGHT away! Did you get him at a pet store? If so there is high likelihood he is a puppy mill puppy and they don't care about the health of their pups. They just want to sell them.

It could be his tonsils.I had a Beagle who used to get tonsilitis when he was young, and this used to cause him to cough and gag.A trip to the vet and some antibiotics always put him right and he eventually grew out of it as he got older.I would definitely consult a vet, though. You never know,it could be something serious.Good luck with your pup!

it sounds like kennel cough which is pretty common for puppies. it usually clears on it's own but sometimes needs the attention of a vet. But, the dog is healthy and normal. For more info see below.

You need to take him to the vets.

At 4 months (much like human babies) his immune system isn't fully developed yet so he could have picked up anything at all.

It could be as simple as another person pointed out, that he's something actually stuck in his throat, but either way it's definitely best to get it checked out.

Pup can't be comfortable!

I wouldn't hesitate to take him to a vet, it may well be a cold but if something is stuck in his throat it may well get dislodged with the coughing and block the airways, could be life threatening.

I have one almost ten years old. Aren't they the most precious dogs? I suspect an allergy unless he's recently been in a kennel.
