we use high class, extravagant, luxerious or sporty, hip and a few people have already said fancy. Which is probably the best example of a word we'd use instead. There is a thousand different things we might say in it's place. But fancy comes to mind as the closest comparison in my mind.

Some here have said that americans sometimes do use it, but I can attest that I have never heard an american say it, unless they were referencing posh spice. things might be different in the fashion circles. But in the larger public, you won't really hear it in my experience

POSH literally means PORT OUT , STARBOARD HOME which meant the side of the ship that your cabin was on when sailing to and from India from Southampton round the cape of good hope.
These were the most expensive cabins because they were in the shade of the midday sun and were preferred by the rich.and they were cooler.
It became a nick name for wealthy people in the 20's and 30's.

So why not use it in the States ?

An American translation of "posh" would be something like - fancy, stylish, expensive, "in", upscale, maybe hip, cool, etc. Posh is infrequently used in the US. BTW - Posh is actually an acronym for Port Out, Starboard Home - referring to the best side of the cruise ship (south facing - from Europe to America and back)...

Well, i do use posh, but the americans who aren't up on the british slang would say fancy, that would be the most common, maybe even stuck-up but stuck-up is more of an attitude

Posh is a Britishism, Americans aren't really concerned with it so much but those of us who take notice of glamourous people simply call them 'Posh'
