The bible is a literal history book, a literal reference to Christian truths and a spiritual guild of types and shadows that can only be understood through and by the Holy Ghost. To those righteous enough to be this close to the Holy Ghost, This means interpretation of a single run of verses can take on different meanings according to the need of understanding we have at different times. The whole bible is like this. These types and shadows are to guild us in understanding the modern day application of these ancient texts and to help us to learn the spiritual depth of these applications. In other words, how to find the base root of understanding. All other interpretations of these holy writs are false.

I believe the Bible becomes interpretational once God opens your eyes to the truth that He has in His Book especially for you. His Holy Spirit makes the Bible real to you, then it is no longer just another book to read. It becomes very personal . Man cannot see nor understand God's written word without the help of His Holy Spirit because the Bible is spiritual and this where God speaks to your heart and soul. You will be amazed at how much you will interpret of His Word once God grabs a hold of you and makes His Book real just for you. God loves you more than you will ever know . Anyone can attempt to give you an answer but I know for a fact that only God can give you the right answer , especially tailored just for you . There's so many amazing things that God wants to share with you in His Book. He's waiting for you to ask Him.

The original could be taken literal once you understood the people back then. How ever it has been interpretations for some time now!
In 1975 we had 25,000 different church's be cause people wanted to believe only what they wanted to believe! Many others have become places of entertainment facilities. Many pastors have become Actor's and Actresses! It has become a place of money collection! and all about money! They tell the people to have faith that God will take care of them. I think they should practice what they preach, If your following Gods will, he will see to it that your taken care of. It is very evident that they don't believe that!
Council of church's is another joke! The scriptures tell us that absolutely no one has the right to add or take away from the scriptures. It says woe unto them that do. If they truly believed in God, they wouldn't dare to change it. God had it the way he wanted regardless of what these peons think and feel! They have people judging God because of what they have done. Judging God based on Churches, in stead of the other way around!

I think it is all interpretations. It was written at a time when people were being persecuted for following the Christian beliefs. So it had to be written in parables so only the people who it was written for could read them and understand what they meant. I don't think it is meant to be taken literally. For example: Jesus did not feed the masses actual food for 3 day and nights he fed them the word of the Lord. Jesus did not calm the actual sea he calmed the people who were following him. So I don't take it all literally. I don't even know if I believe it or not. It was written by men. So is it all real. Hard to say. All religion was written by men so something to think about. I think though that it does give a good example of how someone should live their life and treat others. I don't think it is worth dying over. Peoples religious beliefs are getting out of control.

In many ways it is interpretive-whenever Jesus tells a story--parables.--numbers have a significance--they all have meanings.
If you care--look at the first miracle jesus did- changing water to wine.
Where was it done,- at a wedding of family members of his mother--he said gather clay pots(meant to symbolize human bodies-from dust you came and dust you shall return, also the burial place of the time was referred to as the potters field)--full of water(man born of water-embryonic fluid, water breaking when a child is born)--and he changed it to wine, wine that when tasted was marvelled as being the best ever tasted.(the blood of christ).
meaning---start your work at home among family members, the first thing to accomplish is to bring man to christ. His first work and the only reason he came.
much of the truth in the bible is not on the surface , but is only revealed upon study and research back to the original language. that is why books like Strong's Concordance and the Companion Bible are required in order to really understand what is written.
--But it IS all literal, in that it is written and there for all to read.
If you read the Bible like you do the back of a cereal box you won't get much out of it.

Only smurfs take it literally.
But like a dream that works deeply on the psyche, there is nothing wrong with trying to interpret it.
The main problem, and you see it in the hoops Christians will send their minds through, is the idea that it is prose instead of poetry.
The irony is that poetry is more powerful, but they seem to want to give that up for some crippled 'literal' truth.

At the point at which it is opened. It is written in literal sense but everyone who reads it has a different interpretation of it. Why else would we have so many churches and doctrines and such?

Whether it is literal literal or parable literal the entire Bible is for real. and literal. I am truly sorry for all of you who do not believe in the Bible and the Word of God. I know you have theGod given right to Believe what you want but only one true belief will get you to heaven.

The bible is metaphor. It really is a work of fiction in that not even Bible scollars can be sure what parts are historical and which a allegory. It's really best to read it for intent rather than content. The message is clear even if the facts are debatable.

I don't know the answer.
It seems to be a personal interpretation, and unfortunately it's strongly dependant upon religious beliefs.
This is one of the best questions I've ever read on yahoo.
