well........do you spend time with the family? not just coming home from work and eating dinner and watching TV. quality time. do you? the problem with golf is it takes so fu cking long.....if you want to compromise you need to do this: get up at the crack of dawn...i mean before the sun rises and get to the course. wait in line to get off as soon as possible before the reserved tee times show up. you can finish a round in about 3 1/2 hours. you can be back home in time to start cooking breakfast or brunch. every ones happy, its all good, and you have the rest of the day with your family.

Find a good family golf program. When I say family golf, that does not mean the family has to play together unless they want to. I recommend they don't. This is a new program designed so the family can go to the golf course together. You could practice or go play. Your wife could take a group lesson with other beginners and the kids would so something together. Then on the way home everyone can share golf stories. Once she learns how to play it will help you out on vacations.. I'm sure she would be like most ladies when they start out and only want to play 6 to 9 holes. She could go shop while you play golf. The bottom line your playing golf and getting some time in with her. Last month the PGA did a big family golf promotion, it may still be going on. Go to www.playgolfamerica.com to find courses in your area with that type of program

This one is easy: Spend more time with the family. No, really. Do things with the wife (and kids) and then go golfing. Don't go golfing more than twice in a row without doing something with the family too.
However, there are plenty of husbands/dads that go golfing so they can drink with their buddies and complain about the wife/family. I hope you are not in this crowd. Since you asked the question, then I'll assume you are not.
Just do more with the wife so that she feels important. Otherwise, you may not have a wife much longer.

I can relate to your dillemma. In a nutshell, your problem can be resolved through planning ahead.
The problem though is that golf is seen by your wife as a selfish game because it takes up a lot of your and her free time, leaving no quality time with the family.
The way around this is to plan ahead. Find a quiet time to sit with your wife and try and divide your time equally between your wife, kids and golf, thus creating a brokered compromise. Leave a few weeks in your family diary open so that all family members can book your time. But, stick to your plans and do not push the limits of the brokered truce.
Most golf clubs publish their competition diaries many months in advance, so choose which competitions you want to play in. For example, if you like the challenge of medal play, choose these fixtures first. If team competitions are your thing, then choose those.
Good luck.

OK some of the answers are just mean. My hubby loves golf. He is a happier person when he plays once a week. I swim everyday to keep me happy. Encourage your wife to find a activity to share with her friends. Perhaps you need to watch the kids while she goes and plays.

Look at your life as a whole pie....what portion of time do you give to your family and to golf? How many slices? If it's lopsided then you know how to fix it...in the end...when you are older and your kids are grown do you want the memories of family or more time at the course?...it's all up to you to regulate your time....no one can do it for you.....You can balance your life...it's not so hard....put your heart in both ..family and sports and you won't be sorry......from a old lady who is trying to save you and your family life from going down the tubes....protect your family life and still enjoy your free time playing...hugs to you from Mama Jazzy Geri

Had friends with exact problems. They tee off at 6.00 a.m. or as soon as there's some lights. Finish 18 holes by 11.30-45 go home for lunch with their wives. P.S. these guys play everyday they don't work; i.e. Sat, Sun, Public Holidays, religions day, Christmas, Chinese new year, ....etc..etc..
Had friends in US, they play at 4.30 p.m. after work until 9.00 pm. (daylight reserve), and you could play five times a week, and play daddy's home on weekends!
It's tough being amatuer with other jobs to make income, as they have to spend lunch times going to dept stores hang out at golf shops buying balls, equipments, testing new clubs, getting tips from Pros, and play in the evening..
