You have to be a mechanic for a helicopter that has a flight crew other than pilots in the aircraft. AH-64's and OH-58's do not have door gunners or crew chiefs so you will never get on one of those. UH-60's and Chinooks will allow you to be on flight status and go on missions. When you get to your unit they will most likely put you in a maintenance company until you get some experience and prove you are not retarded. Act motivated and learn as much as possible and you will get placed in a flight company quickly and start flying. Talk to the flight company 1SG's and let them know you want in their company on flight status. This way you are on their radar when they need to bring in a new guy. Lastly, if you are compelled to do so, (in the Army) put in a warrant officer packet after you get a little experience. I have never seen a qualified crew chief get turned down for a warrant officer pilot slot.

I am a helicopter mechanic currently in Iraq, as you progress in rank you will become a crew chief, which is a mechanic, and you will fly every mission that helicopter goes on. You actually have a lot of flight time as a mechanic, good luck

Depends on the type of Helicopter. Blackhawk and Chinook enlisted guys are both ground crew and get to fly in those choppers. Apache enlisted guys are merely ground crew, the Apache only holds two pilots.

So if your MOS is 15R, no, you dont fly. But 15T or 15U does fly.

Obviously - a pilot
but copilots, gunners, and even snipers get to ride in the cockpit throughout a mission - although door gunners are one of the most easily killed ppl on the ship!
