Some people are so snotty when it comes to answering on here...I am the cat constipation queen as of last week...My cat had been licking the hair off his belly.(im guessing to message the food stuck in there) I took him to the vet, after losts of cash they found nothing, but the exray showed he was just full of #2! I have gave him butter, vasaline (safe in small amounts) laxatone, hairball remedy and colace (which he threw up)..the vet recommended the colace though. I wouldnt give him anything but maybe some unspiced pumkin or sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon of metamucil in with his food. Cod liver oil helps too..just break the capsule onto the food, cats love it. My cat is eating healthy even during the constipation week...He finally acheived a good poo today! (im happy) so is he..but make sure he is getting water...you can also add it to wet catfood...take up the dry food for now, that can cause constipation in a cat..and to whoever asked why she is monitering her cat poo? CUZ SHE'S A RESPONSIBLE CAT OWNER...dont be a rude.

Cat Is Constipated

I have something called 'cat-a-lax', which is vaseline with some flavoring added, for when my elderly cat is constipated. It says to put a little on the cat's paw as an earlier poster described, well for my cat that doesn't work! I tried that when he first needed it, a couple hours later there was brown sticky paste on the carpet, the bed, the chairs, and the cat, he was mad as h*ll but he hadn't licked it at all! Now I put the dose on my finger and stick it in his throat sortof as if I were to give him a pill but then I rub it off on the corner of his mouth. I'm sure some cats lick it off, but mine didn't! And make *sure* it's poo'ing that isn't working... constipation isn't quite as serious, you can try an over-the-counter or home med for a day or so (although if it's longer than that you'll still need to see a vet), but if it's a urinary tract blockage or infection instead, that can be fatal in a very short time! Especially if it's a male, chances are he has kidney stones that block the urinary tract.

Hi there...any human medication should never be administered without first consulting with a vet. The reason is that most human medications are toxic to pets. Only your vet would know which are safe and what the correct dosage requirements would be to treat your pet safely based on his weight and age.

Nix hairballs since you said no. It is the number cause of constipation in felines : http://www.moggies.co.uk/articles/hairballs.html

An animal that is dehydrated as well as lacking fibre from the diet will be more likely to be constipated.

As an alternative idea to get things moving in the bowels, consider offering wet canned food and add a 1/4 teaspoon of Metamucil. Your vet can confirm that this is safe to use. Canned food has added moisture to help with the hydration levels. Dry food should be taken up for awhile until your cat's bowels recover more to a normal movement.

[Edit: a capsule of cod liver oil also is helpful]

A cat that has serious constipation will act differently so I would suspect your cat may not have much to pass if he isn't eating much in general. I would consider another veterinary opinion just to be sure as well.

Here's a website that discusses in detail about constipation...diagnosing and treating respectively. Please consider taking a moment to review it and see if there's anything your vet may have missed in the initial diagnosis.

Try giving the cat a tablespoon of olive oil. It can help in a few hours, but after 4 days, the cat probably needs manual disimpaction or an enema done by the vet.

If your vet does not resolve this problem tomorrow, please look for a new vet. Constipation can get very serious in cats fairly quickly, and should be taken seriously.

I applaud you for not being complacent and just waiting until the vet does something.

Another thing is that if the cat starts having a small amount of diarrhea, it can be getting around the blockage and doesn't mean the problem is any better.

You can give a glycerine microclysma special for babies. It is liquid, in a small bubble, with a small tube at the end that you put in. Or you can give him a little paraffin oil (also human for constipation) from the mouth. My guess is he is not eating much and hence he has not enough stool to do. You should find out what's wrong with his appetite. Does he urinate properly? If he strains and doesn't do anything, and he doesn't eat, this could mean he has urinary tract blockage, not constipation. This needs urgent medical attention. If he throws up it is another sign.

Don't know if this will help, but works for me, a can of tuna fish (water enclosed) The cats like the flavor of the water which gives the more hydration and some of the tuna,of course, But must be careful not to do to on a daily basis, can give them the "runs"

try mixin in olive oil with his food better... its more gentle to the stomach... and what are you feeding your cat. if its market cat food that may have something to do with it... try natural balance...you can find it at petco... both can and dry... best food around.. or another premium quality food.. itll cost more but will cut you from going to the vet so often for stomach problems... also itll make your cats coat nice and shiny and shed less. and wont poop as much...
