I notice that many restaurants (even McDonald's) are changing to European roast. I find it too strong and bitter. Traditional American coffee and a more subtle flavor which I prefer. Places like Starbucks don't even serve a good, fresh-ground, American coffee, as a option.

I love european coffee...
Actually more than the type of raosting, it depends on the type of brewing/making...
You can make a decent cup of coffee with a mediochre bean. and ruin a good bean by brewing it badly...
In America coffee is made with a small amount of coffee and a large quantity of water...
In Europe, the same amount of coffee would probably make 1 cup instead of a whole pot!
And if you don't like strong coffeee...don't ever try turkish or middle eastern coffee... It's almost like a syrup, they brew it in a small copper pitcher shaped pot, and has the sugar in with the coffee..Delicious, but it could probably raise the dead !
:-D
(American coffee in general terms, is way too watered down for the european palate, used to a more concentrated flavour.)

I can't say I'm with you on this one. The whole reason I started drinking coffee is because of Italian espresso.

I take my coffee strong. Italian coffee is my favorite.
American blends are too mild for me.
