The maximum percentage for beer in Utah over the counter (beer bars and grocery stores) is 3.2 percent. Beer bars and grocery stores cannot carry any alcoholic beverage that's higher than that. They do not have wine or liquor.

In Utah, the only place to get anything with higher than 3.2 percent (including malt liquor coolers) is in the state-run liquor store or a private club that has a liquor license (which is also supplied through the state-run liquor department at full retail with zero markup -- only the mixer is marked up for the purpose of making money for the club).

The 3.2 percent beer is the same as was served in Colorado in the non-liquor bars (beer only) for kids of age 19 and 20 when I was growing up there. The real bars (minimum age 21) had 6 percent beer on tap or in a container, along with mixed drinks or wine.

As a side note: I drank Singha beer in Thailand, which I was told was about 12 percent.

You might need many answers for this question to cover all 50 states.

In oklahoma our liquor laws and anything having to do with the consumption and sale of alcoholic beverages is under the dictatorship of the ABLE (Alcohol Beverage Law Enforcement) commission (the booze nazis). Beer sold in conv. and grocery stores must NOT be in excess of 3.2% also, same applys to "beer only" bars . Beer purchased in liquor stores and bars that serve liquor may be in excess of 3.2% by volume. Strong beer and liquor must be purchased through ABLE, making it very difficult to make a living running a bar or lounge, 26% of every dollar brought in from the sale of str. beer or liquor is levied in tax. This is before any overhead(electric, rent, payrole, inventory etc...) is payed. In a nut-shell, don't expect to come to Oklahoma and make an (honest) living in the f&b business. Such is life in the buckle of the bible belt

I don't know of a resource that lists by state. Knowing which state would be helpful. In North Carolina, South Carolina, and Ohio, 6% is the limit by law.

It varies from state to state. The link below provides a pretty extensive list of laws and state that have % caps.
