People tell crap!

One cannot tell you, why. I am a systems engineer and network admin with plenty of experience. To figure why a PC becomes slow, somebofdy like me needs to sit in front of it to be able to not only see its performance but also to go through all possible reasons, preferences, features and so on that can cause a comoputer to slow down.
It can be the chip, it can be the bus, ich can be fragmented files, it can wrong preferences, it can be wrong administration of memory addresses and so on. It is impossible to tell from distance and with these few facts you mention.

Besides, if your hardware is very latest one, then I really wonder why you use a 256 MB mem chip after all ...

first check is all ram is detected by the system or not.

press Ctrl+alt+Delete. to open task manager. press on Performance tab. check in physical memory (will be displayed in KB convert it into MB)

if all memory is detected, then check the free space in the active partion (OS installed parttion) if the free space is less then 1 GB then delete the temp files and clean the harddisk.

if you have installed os last 1 yr back, then reinstall the OS.
