police scanner question!!.please help!?

ok i have heard that if i buy a scanner from radio shack that i can find the frequency for the local police and fire dept. is this correct can i go and buy 1 at radio shack and be able to hear these emergency calls etc.?

When 311 keys the mic. it scans though at finds a open # like 856.2575, when the key is let up, this # is taking by tha next user. 311 keys again the system find new # 856.4550, and so forth moving in circles #. SO find out what frequency you'll be needing for your area. Our fire stations, and the sheriff is still on high Band #'s 148-174MHz.,but the inner city is on trunk system. The EMT or some of the police are on the UHF band 450-470Mhz. AND be were! if you get hand held scanner some cops will give you crap for having it. You can give the line you use it for NASCAR!, there on the 800 MHZ band. SO just LIKE the OTHERS answers ,YES you CAN buy SOME thing like :AIR/VHF/UHF/800MHz I & II trunk tracker scanner. OR: AIR/VHF/UHF scanner,AND get Police Call Frequency Book the #'s should be up dated each year. Watch it radio shack most will know less information than the c.b. shops or radio shops.
