The VR6 engine has a pretty consistent gas mileage across VW models through the years, here's roughly how much it should be:

Regular fuel:
MPG (city) 19
MPG (highway) 26
MPG (combined) 21

It depends on the driver. I get at least 5-6 more miles per gallon than my wife. Why? She has a foot that stomps the accelerator.
Your vW should get at least in the high 20s in the city and in the high 30s on the road at speeds of 50-60 mph. Faster? Lower mileage.

Milage will vary greatly depending on how spirited the driving is. Normal milage for this model is anywhere from 18 to 28 mpg but as i said it varies depending on the speed of acceleration.

For real fuel mileage you can see, go vw diesel,40MPG and up are of the norm.
