Build a wall. Make sure the wall is in front of a 500 YD grid of millions of anti personel mines. Make sure an electrified fence is in front of the mine field. Make sure the guards on the wall have the most sophisticated equipment to monitor their zones and have orders of shoot to kill.
Employ unmanned drones to patrol the border with infared and UV cameras.
There are mtion sensors outside of area 51, use them on the border.

Big wall needed yesterday. China built 3,000 miles of the first section of the Great Wall in a mere 10 years with only human labor and caveman technology. We should have no excuses for putting a wall up. Even if everybody got together and built the wall the same way the Chinese did through the desert with red willow boughs and sand cement it should get done. They built approximately a mile of wall a day even through the mountainous regions.

There are two aspects to border security. You are concentrating on the threat of terrorists illegally entering the country. Of course there many more non-terrorists illegally entering the country.
Of those who are not terrorists, they come here for two reasons; to work or to mooch. I don't have a problem with people who come here to work. That leaves moochers and terrorists.
If we get rid of social services and let people rely on private and personal charity instead, we would take away the incentive for moochers.
No let us address the people who want to come here and not mooch. We need to streamline immigration procedures so it doesn't take years to become a citizen and do away with immigration quotas. With nothing to mooch, no need to restrict legal immigration.
Then, go ahead and beef up the border all you want.

Your TV shows portray homeland security, as an extremely well funded powerful, Technically resourced organisation.
It is not!
Most shows and movies portray your Presidents as wise men with beautiful intentions that you all would be proud of.
Like most countries the US has a violent history.

Spend more money on public health and schools.

We do need to secure the borders for everyone safety. We have all seen the post-too many undesirables coming in. There is no reason not to protect all the people here. And we need to screen those here.
What ever it takes-wall , fence, gunfire-we owe the people here protection.
