Rowing (machine) excercises are very good for that.
It's one simple excercise to encompass all the muscle groups (upper and lower abs included)to strengthen your back.

Sit ups.
Strengthen your front and you strengthen your back.
Both need to be equal according to each individual muscles need for you to have a strong back

I'm guessing you mean relieving some pain in your back... Usually that's caused by a weaker core. So if you build up your core (your abs area) you should take a lot of pressure off of your back.

sit ups
push ups
pull ups
butterfly weights
inverted butterfly weights
holding your belly button in and stomach tight throughout the day

lay on ur stomach.....raise ur armsup in font of u...and ur legs and feet straight behind u(knees,shins,and feet off ground)....this looks like a "superman" pose.....hold for as long as u can...repeat 2 more timez......also u should strenghthen ur abs(try some situps)...when ur abs are strong then ur back doesnt have 2 have so much stress on it
