I cant speak on the Navy but in the AF they will take a GED but its only like a couple slots at the start of the year (in the military the new year starts in Oct). If you friend wants to join tell them to get to a recruiter now so that hopefully they can slide into one of the slots in Oct cause they go fast. Another problem you are going to run into is the fact that both the AF and Navy have to many people in and are cutting thousands of people. I felt the effect of this when they told me even though I had a perfect military record I wouldnt be able to reenlist in the AF. I didnt mind though I just crossed over to the Army through the "Blue to Green" program and am very happy that it happened. If you do get a contract for the AF these days you are still looking at 6-12 months before you will leave for training and you basically just have to grab whatever job the AF is hurting in. You can only guess what jobs those might be....

Technically, yes, but the reality is it is EXTREMELY difficult to do so. There are over all far fewer slots available to GED holders, they must score higher on the ASVAB(minimum of 50 vice 35) and when you tackonthe fact that she is female, her road just got that much harder.(less slots in general for women, especially in the Navy).
HOWEVER: one semester of college taking 100 level courses( 15 credits total) will turn that GED into the equivalent of a HS diploma and open up a lot more opportunities for your friend.
Just be warned: the AF and Navy are both overmanned, and are getting more picky about who they are letting in while at the same time letting people go in droves.
The new Fiscal year starts October 1st, and it is quite possible that all of the available GED slots for the year are already spoken for.

I have a GED and have been in the Air Force now for almost 4 years. It may be tougher to get in the Air Force with one now though because of all the personnel cut backs they are doing. They are obviously still recruiting people but aren't letting as many in I believe.

Yes all services will take GED's however it's the asvab that counts most I would suggest your friend go to the library and take out the asvab study guide. Thus she can place high and get a decent job. She won't have to commit until after the asvab test so give it a go if the score is lower than say 60 I would stay out of the military.

Why stop being mediocre
afraid to actually fight and possibly die?
Your friend has been mediocre for awhile how would she expect to get in the Air Force or Navy with only a GED
Magic???

Of Course they will. All branches of service will accept anyone with a GED education. i think you are confused her because they usually will give some money to a vet for his schooling if they are attending school when they sign ( college) and they may have a certain amount a veteran can use once he is out for schooling.

Yes but! Also at this time, both of these services are denying re-enlistment to uneeded MOS holders and in fact are even encouraging those who want to re-enlist in that situation to join the Army and Marines who need people urgently. Just been through all this.
