Make it a game. You can sing the "Clean up, Clean up, Everybody do your share" song. Kids love it. Or have a contest to see who can pick up the most toys and things the fastest. Unfortunately, you'll probably still have to help, but it should get done faster, and with a lot less fuss.

Make it fun. You have to make him feel as an important part of what's taking place. You sing the clean up song. It goes: Clean up, Clean up everbodies cleaning up wouuu. You can even purchase that on a Barney Edition. It will all come to you.

three years old seems very young to clean up, however, making it a fun, "together" activity worked for my son and me. children like to be included in (appropriate) grown up activities. you could say, are you ready to help mommy, or daddy or whoever? they almost always say yes. Barney the purple dinosaur sang the clean up song. and as corney as it is, that kind of thing often works as well.

Also, don't let him take out a new toy untill he puts away the old one.

Why does HE have to help You?Why don't You help HIM?Tell him "Do you need some help with the cleaning or you can do it yourself?".That's how I kind and firm show my children they just HAVE to clean.

My cousin used to ask her 3 year old to pickup, help her to pickup, and if all that did not work she would pick it up herself and throw those toys or clothes in the trash. It worked wonders after her kid found out she was serious.

Make it fun. Think of Mary Poppins for inspiration.

You just need to teach by example and make sure you are instructing him what to pick up as each instance occurs
