Our black lab puppy just turned one and we've only heard him bark 3 times. We asked the vet about this when he was a few months old and they said some dogs just aren't very barky, not to worry. So, we're actually kind of glad. When he does bark, it seems to almost scare him. We have an older dog who does most of the barking when something comes around, so I think the pup just never had to do it and didn't do it. You'd think it would have made him join in.

That's a good thing. Dogs usually bark when they're trying to tell whoever is in charge that something is not status quo or kosher and the barking starts and usually is worst during adolescence. She's probably that quiet because she's not yet an adolescent. Hopefully, she stays that way through out the crazy adolescent year(s) and beyond! BTW, if you do get into a tug-of-war with her, you must always win and she must learn a command to drop it when your done playing, or drop anything that's in her mouth that you want. As to her wimpering when she can't find you, remember that she still is a puppy that naturally has mamma or other pack members constantly caring for her or littermates with her when mamma leaves to get food, but that does sound like it might be the beginnings of separation anxiety issues and she should get trained out of the separation anxiety. Dachshunds are hunting breeds that are bred for long walks and periods of chase and migration; therefore, before you leave her, for example, for work, make sure you take her for nice, brisk walk to tire her out a little, not too long or crazy as she's still a puppy. Here, you might want to establish some crate training to simulate a comfortable den environment and put her in her "den" when you have to leave her for any time during the day or when you go to bed at night. At first, she might whine, wimper and object to being put in the crate, but you have to ignore it (don't say or do anything! just follow your normal routine) and let her acclimate to the crate. Once she calms down and acclimates to the crate, talk to her and perhaps give her a treat or two as a reward for being calm in the crate. Only reward her with affection or treats for being calm and submitting to your desires and demands. She's not a human child, so if you try to talk to her and verbally calm her down while she's anxious, she'll just take that as getting affection for being anxious and think she's being rewarded for her wimpering and being in a stressful state. It's important that you don't do things like carry her around everywhere or take her to bed with you as that will contribute to her anxiety. Let her be a growing puppy and don't force her to be a human baby. Most importantly, never use the crate as a punishment or a correction for bad behavior. You can use it as a "time out" to calm her down and remove her from over excitement, but don't yell and curse as you put her in the crate. The crate needs to be her retreat and safe haven for when no one is around to comfort her or just in general

There are dogs that simply don't bark because they don't have anything to say yet. Your dog is just a baby. It's probably not accustomed to its new environment. Wait until it gets older and with age comes territorial behavior. That's when they bark and you wish they'd kinda stop it before the neighbors start complaining.

One of my chihuahuas didn't bark until she was 8 months old, and still doesn't bark much. Don't worry about it. When she starts barking, she may never shut up! LOL

Have you ever heard her make any noise? Have you asked a vet? Or maybe you have a good dog that doesn't like to bark. I'd have my vet check it out.

Not necessaraly normal or abnormal, but give her time. She will. It happened to my Uncle, his didn't bark for 10 months. It would differ from dog to dog. If you don't like what's going on, see a vet.

Maybe he just can't. I know that sounds weird but I have an 15 week old kitten that my cat gave birth to, so we've had him all his life and he opens his mouth like he wants to meow but he can't. He can hiss and purr and make this mumbly sound but no meowing. I guess he just dosen't want to. Maybe your dog dosen't have a reason to or could be very indicisive.

You could try letting it interact with other dogs. Teach him to be social!
Dachshunds are very gentle, quiet, wizened dogs anyway. Mine didn't bark, except when she got really excited.
