I've never had a bible and am quite low on money. I consider myself agnostic, but am considering converting to Christianity. I want an actual bible. Not an online one. And preferably the NIV as I hear it is much easier to understand. Please don't tell me to go to a church as I am a bit intimidated by that right now. Please help me as I am very interested. Thank you!

Thank you all so much! I didn't realize there was such a big difference between the NIV and the KJV. I just thought the NIV was made easier to understand for beginners like me. Thanks all!

Walmart should have NIV Bibles (in paperback) for $3 to $5 or so. Its not much money and a good investment. I know they carry King James Versions but the NIV is much easier to read as is one of the best modern English translations that does not inject opinionated interpretation of the scriptures.
Any proper translation has to be as closely mirrored to the original ancient texts as possible. The NIV satisfies that in the current common English tongue.

May I suggest the KJV version? Most all rewrites have been messed with...I mean, really bad. Whole chapters are missing in some instances. Although the KJV's a little tough to read ('cuz it's old english) it has all the origional texts still intact...
Tell you what, go ahead and have a couple other Bibles around. Just be sure and check them against the KJV...it's the most direct translation you can find from the origional manuscripts.
Also, here's the website that shares a lot more info about this issue:
Oh, in answer to your origional question: check out Bible.com. You can read it all, any version, online! ^^

First off, the KJV of the bible is the closest to the original translation that there is...Not the NIV...If you would Like I will Give you a KJV Bible...But I will not give you a NIV, because God says not to add to or take away from his word.... And so, If interested e-mail me and i will mail you one if you live in the USA.... God Bless......

I would recommend you not read the NIV. I used to, until I found out how riddled it was with purposeful translation errors. It was also translated largely by people who mocked the Bible. For more information, read "New Age Versions", by G.A. Riplinger.

You might be able to get a free KJV Bible here:

but I would personally advise just visiting a church and asking for one. They won't bite, Christians are commanded to be kind. The KJV is actually the easiest to understand, reading at about a 5th grade level.

NIV bibles are study bibles so they are never cheap. I have seen them on sale for $19.99 at a christian book store, but never less than that. I have one and it is extremely helpful when you are researching or studying the word of God. May you continue to allow the Lord Jesus to draw you near to him!

I really don't know where to get one and if I knew you personally I'd do everything that's possible to get you one. I'll be praying so you can get one with explanations and all. I am glad that you want to convert to Christianity, just remember to focus on Jesus's life itself and not the church, the pastor, or the people. God Bless.
