No they are not the same thing. Religion is about trying to reach God through some work such as being "good." Christianity is about having a one's sins forgiven and having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In Christianity, one reaches God by going through Jesus.

Religion and Christianity are not identical. Christianity is one of the many different religions. Some other main religions include Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Christianity evolved from Judaism. All Christians share many beliefs. However, there are different groups (denominations) because of disagreements between Christians. The three main Christian denominations of the world are Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. Most religions have denominations or subgroups, not just Christianity. All religions are man made; birthed from philosophical thought. All are faith-based and some are based upon historical events. None can be proven to be factual.

Religion is every institution that believes in a higher power and have a set of beliefs that they follow on a daily basis or whatnot.
Christianity is a religion, contrary to what anyone tells you. And there are two kinds of Christianity, by the way. There is a "Christian" who is ANYONE who believe that Jesus Christ is their saviour. There is another "Christian" that some call Born Again Christian which is another off shoot since there are MANY Christian religions. Born Again Christians are sometimes also called Evangelical Christians since they are very determined in spreading their faith.
(My little opinion here: I think sometimes that they are a bit overzealous. They think they're right, I get that. EVERYONE thinks they're right... but maaaaaaan... sometimes they just take it overboard and become insulting.)
ANYWAYS, I couldn't tell you how many religions there are. They are innumerable, I think, especially since there are so many sub categories as well.
Example: Christianity is the big umbrella. Underneath that is Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. Under Protestantism is Born Again Christians, Seventh Day Adventists, Baptists...
They are all man made. They are all based on the rules and/or beliefs of a man. Buddhism from Buddha, Islam from Muhammad and whomever else. Sometimes WHO was the starting line of the religion is unknown because it's so old or there were just no records of it that far back, for example, Hinduism can't be traced far enough back.

I believe Religion, probably began with good intentions, has had many negative effects. It should be a relationship spiritually between you and your creator. Being a Christian is far from having a religion. Everyone comes from the same Source, and that source sent His Son to Earth to physically show us the Way. He is Christ, and people who acknowledge and accept this are called Christians. However, because one believes does not make it a religion, it should make it a relationship with God your Creator. Because it is the Truth. Everyone will Confess sooner or Latter when their day is upon them. Better sooner than later! God Bless!

Religion is a type of belief system. Christianity is a subset of religions. There are many types of Christianity, but numbering them is probably doomed to failure because, in addition to the many formal Christian institutions, there are many informal ones (going all the way down to personal sets of Christian beliefs).
Complicating the matter is the fact that even Christians do not agree on what religions are Christian. LDS believers ("Mormons") call themselves Christians, but are said by some other Christians not to be Christians at all. The same is true of Catholics.

First, there is religion, and there are many religions in the world, one of them being Christianity. Within the "tree" of Christianity, there are three major limbs: Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Protestantism. Within each of these three limbs, there are even more splits, more branches. I believe that the limb with the most branches/splits is Protestantism.
So you see, all sects of Christianity are part of religion, but not all of religion are part of Christianity.
Here is a list of world religions and their appx number of followers:
Christianity 2.1 billion
Islam 1.3 billion
Secular/Atheist/Irreligious/Agnostic/Nontheist 1.1 billion
Hinduism 900 million
Buddhism 708 million (see also Buddhism by country)
Chinese folk religion 394 million
Primal indigenous ("Pagan") 300 million
African traditional and diasporic 100 million
Sikhism 23 million
Juche 19 million
Spiritism 15 million
Judaism 14 million
Bahá'à Faith 7 million
Jainism 4.2 million
Shinto 4 million (see below)
Cao Dai 4 million
Zoroastrianism 2.6 million
Tenrikyo 2 million
Neo-Paganism 1 million
Unitarian Universalism 800,000
Rastafari movement 600,000

There are far more religions in the world than just Christianity. Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Taoism, Nature-centered faiths, and numerous others are around. Check out this great website for more info.

Q.1 - Christianity is a religion, but not all religions are Christians.
Q.2 - Too many to count!
Q.3 - Also too many to count! If you tried, you'd be sure to get yet one more response that you forgot about "this one".
Q.4 - Yes...they are ALL man-made, but all claim to have been somehow divinely inspired.
