Why are customers so freaking rude to people who are there to help them? I have been a receptionist, a waitress, a hostess, a manager, and a pet groomer, and no matter where I am or who I'm working for, the customers are always RUDE!!! These people are here to help you out, and yes, they get paid for it, but that doesn't give anyone the right to be a jerk to them! And to any morons out there who don't think you 'have' to tip the waitress- go to an all you can eat buffet and serve yourself! Waitresses make TWO DOLLARS AN HOUR!!! TWO!!! And people sit there all night being jerks and walk away without tipping. You might has well just walk out on your bill.

What is with the rudeness???

And no, it's not my attitude- if you pick up a phone and ask how you can help someone, and the first thing you hear is a long pissy rant, you can pretty much assume it's the customer. If you're a groomer, and a customer requests you be the one to groom her dog time and time again, and is still rude to you and won't tip you, you can assume it's the customer. And like someone said, 99% of the time, the customers will start hinting pretty quickly that a freebie would shut them up. It's not about the service anymore, it's about people not having any common decency.

I work in customer service at LL Bean during the holidays, and people get pissed when things are out of stock. They wait until 4 days before Christmas and yell at me because they can't get what they want. Unreal. People tend to think that if they ***** and complain they will get something for free. It's just the way it is, unfortunately.

PS You'd love me as a customer, I usually overtip because I've been a waitress and I know what you have to deal with.

Oh, do I sympathize!!! I used to work retail. And not just retail, retail in a very affluent( or wannabe affluent) suburb. We are talking, the husband is either old money or works a job that pulls in 6 figures a year, the wives have nannies to take the kids while they drive around in new Mercedes SUVs, and the biggest problem the schools have are fist fights over someone calling the other kid's dad's Rolls Royce an ugly color! And I am not joking! We are talking WASP central! But these people have this mentality that just because they are rich, and you are not, your entire purpose in life is to be their servant.I have literally had to walk away from some people before I took a swing at them, and I am not a violent person. But as I got more involved in psychology (and watching soap operas),I realized these peoples lives must SUCK, if they are displacing their emotions this badly and taking it out on me.And I know for a fact, at least 1 woman was having an affair, and another was married to an alcoholic, and another was being investigated by Child Protective Services.

I think sometimes we've all called places and been angry at the company's service and gone off on the person on the phone a little bit. Or even in person at a restaurant. These people may not be doing the right thing, but dont take it personally, they may be bad people having a bad day, and look at it as taking it out on the company and not the individual that is dealing with them. I have worked in the kind of job where you deal with customers up front, and it does seem like at least once a day, you are dealing with at least one person exceptionally rude for no reason. That is why i try hard to be pleasant to others, and make them feel appreciated. And about tipping, i know there are some jerks out there, but with some of the prices at some of these restaurants, some of us can't afford to tip too all the time, so for those of us coming in with our families, please don't jump to the conclusion that we don't care, understand that some of us just can't do it.

I worked in call center cust service for years, and I hate having to deal with rude people. At the same time, I have found that the rudest customers who make the biggest deal out of things are the only ones that get anything done. I'm talking about dealing with big corporations where all the employees are trained to make the person think the problem is solved with as little service as possible. I have found this in my own experience dealing with phone co, cable, etc. Sometimes you have to yell and scream and ruin somebody's day to get what you want and what you are paying for. I've been on both ends of it and that's the conclusion I always come to. As for being rude to waitresses, that's a whole different story. Any smart person knows it's risky to piss off somebody who handles your food. I believe in not tipping if the service was awful and they deserved it, but if they do a good job I'll sometimes give more than 15%.

Personally, I start out being very pleasant because I feel you "catch more flies with honey than with vinegar". However, I have been in a circumstance where the customer service person isn't listening to me and isn't helping me solve my problem and I only put up with that for so long before I start having to get a little ugly. Unfortunately, this happens a LOT lately with computer customer service people who are in India or somewhere and aren't hearing my problem...just following some algorithm script. I hate that!

I agree, people are mean and rude to customer service reps. They call u for help and when u dont give them the answer they want cuz they want u to either break the law or lose ur job, they get rude wanting to come and murder u or something. I wish some of these people would take these jobs be on the other line and see how it feels, i had a call from a woman and because my name was not sue or sally, or bob or john, she asked to talk to someone who is american! The nerve of her!!

I worked at a store for five and a half years, and believe me, I know what you are talking about.

You go out of your way to help people, but some people will still not be satisfied. They get really pissed off when the pettiest things happen, most of which are not your fault. And they blame you when the store is out of something.

At that job, I can remember going through my daily work thinking that 90 percent of the human race needed to be exterminated. If I were to go back, I'm sure I would redevelop that philosophy.

ok ... i come from a family of BAD TIPPERS. trust me, it makes me very angry. i sometimes leave money under my plate or "go to the bathroom" and just give the waitress a tip then. my family thinks a dollar a person is adequate which is NOT. but, what can i say? i can't convince then otherwise. they are french catholics and stubborn as hell. so, there's people like me ... 16 years old making a hundred bucks a week and i'm tipping my waitresses .. yay for me!

now, it sucks that people are rude. i am a friendly person myself and HATE IT when people are rude. but, hopefully, every now and then you get a wicked nice person to make your day.

hope that helps a little hunn.

I also work in customer service at an in-bound call center. There are three reasons---and I use that term loosly--for this:

1. Some customers are self-centered ego-centric idiots. At work, home etc they are in charge and whenever they snap, people jump. So, when you have to tell them "no" they go balistic.

You've been a waitress, let's say that a customer orders prime rib, and you're out of it. They yell at you. Why? Because, before they came in you PERSONALLY told EVERY CUSTOMER before them to order that same thing. Why did you do that? Because you knew that this jerk was coming in and you personally wanted to make his day miserable and ruin his entire life. HA HA HA You EVIL THING YOU.

2. The other reason for this is because some CS reps are jerks. I'll give you a couple of examples.
Story A. In my own line of business [a call center for a major car rental company] one of my co-workers is too stupid to know her job. She argues with almost every customer. "SIR!! THIS IS YOUR FAULT!!!" She is always transfering calls to the manager, because her attitude and tone of voice tells the customer she does not want to help. I know she passes two to three calls per day, whereas I might get that many in 2 months.
Story B; My extended family went to a local resturant. We were not served by thw wait staff, we were served by the assistant manager:
* My dad asked for more bread. The manager brought it out half done, dropped it on the table and said "Since the gentleman couldn't wait, here's your bread!
* My aunt and a cousin asked for "warm ups" on their coffee, the manager took their mugs into the kitchen, and nuked them instead of getting more coffee.
* My dad told him NOT to add the tip to the bill, and that if he wanted to tip [he always does, even if it is a buffett] he'd leave it on the table, Since the manager was our only waiter, and a jerk dad left no tip. The manager followed him outside and started screaming at him. Of course, my dad screamed right back instead of leaving this jaque **** there to make an idiot of himself.

I will say that one of the owners, came running out and tried to make good and this is a place that I still eat at once in a while.

3. Management. You know as well as I do, that management is often stupid. They tell you and I to tell the customers stupid things and that makes us look bad. Neither one of us can override the policy, but the customer does not know that. In the meantime there's some bozo "upstairs" with his head in a spreadsheet defending his decesion instead of looking at it rationaly.

For what it's worth, this job has taught me to appreciate other front line people to the point that I always tip, and I often tell managers what great workers they have.

People with a little money seem to be worse than those who have none. I have gotten better tips from people i know to be poor than the people that actually have that extra dollar to spare. And somehow you working and helping them makes them feel that they are somehow above you and can treat you however they want. I work in customer service and have seen every nasty angle in which customers can f u c k with you. And because of it i am as nice as i can be to anyone who has to serve me out of respect. If any of these rude people ever had to work in customer service they would get fired after one minute. chances are none have them have ever had to deal with people on a face to face basis day in and day out
