Swearing as in cursing? Yes. As it is written: "Let no filthy talk come out of your mouths, but only what is good for building up as the need may be. This way you will give grace to those who hear you." (Ephesians 4:29)

Swearing as in taking an oath? Yes. As it is written: "Nor should you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. Instead, let your word be 'Yes' for 'Yes' and 'No' for 'No.' Anything more than that comes from the evil one..." (Matthew 5:41)

The Bible does ask us not to take the Lord's name in vain. But as for the other words that are simply deemed as being "bad words," I'm not sure.

When I was little, someone (I can't remember who) told me that every time you say a cuss word, God puts a checkmark next to your name on his list. Well...I'm not so sure about that, but for the most part, I do think it's best to avoid using cuss words. Sometimes they're good for expression, and there are also times when the hammer hits the finger in just the right way and other such things. I guess that, in the end, it's all a matter a judgement.

It is definitely a sin to swear. The Bible makes this abundantly clear. Ephesians 4:29 tells us, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." 1 Peter 3:10 declares, "For, Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech."

I follow the 10 commandments and the only coverage of swearing is to not use the Lord's name in vane. So, as long as you don't say God ******! or Jesus Christ! or Holy ****! I guess you're ok. Still, it is tacky and I would rather you didn't swear at all; except, of course, when you hit your thumb with a hammer.

While it may not be captial "S" Sin it is certainly unhelpful and contrary to Biblical principle.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. -Ephesians 4:29

Profanity is the language of the poor, uneducated, obscene and mocking. It doesnt benefit anybody and offends many people! Plus once you start doing it, its hard to stop! If you cant say it in church why is it acceptable anywhere else?

I think swearing is just not nice to hear. All cuss words are simply man made words. Taking God's name in vain, just means not to use it in a bad way. And if you stop to think about it, no one uses God's name,(English version Jehovah) and back in Biblical times there were many God's. So when one puts the damn after saying God, it could mean any God.

But I still don't like to hear it being said, but that's just me.

No of course I don't give a d@mn what the fvck is wrong with you? All that no swearing sh!t is a bunch of goddam big-azz stupidity.

In short, no I don't think swearing is a sin. Nor do I think saying 'God d@mn it' is a sin--I really mean it as a curse.

And btw I am Catholic. A 'liberal' Catholic, if you will.

Cussing is using improper language ,, Swearing has more to do with oaths and allegiances... Swearing an oath in any other than God's name is a sin..... Cussing is bad grammar.
