There are dogs that readily accept perimeter training.. that is walking your boundaries, and teaching the dog to stay within them. I had a Doberman and a Great Pyrenees that both were reliable to say in an unfenced area.. However, they were exceptionally trainable dogs, and to the Great Pyrenees it is natural....
My friends have a Dalmatian that stays in the 2 foot high fenced yard....and they are usually hard to train...

If your dog hasn't been trained all of his life for such a task, I don't think it can be done..now that he has a taste of total freedom..
However, you might try walking the perimeter with him, over and over, and discouraging him from crossing the line...Who knows, it may help...
If it doesn't, then you will need some kind of fencing..

Use a wooden board fence, about 8' tall, not sure what it is called, but the dogs can't climb over it, which is the worst problem with our small dogs. Bigger dogs might be able to dig under it, not sure. Fence is expensive. You could fence off part of your back yard for him.

Put up a fence high enough that the dog can't jump over it. That might mean 6 feet, depending on the dog.

However, if your neighbors shot him (because he was in their yard?) it probably is time to move to a new neighborhood!

My daughter's dog was shot, so I know it's no joke...:(

A fence.
Some sort of pen or kennel.
There are invisible fences. You bury wires in the yard and put little included flags up to warn the dog. You put the special collar on the dog that will shock him when he gets too close to the wires. They learn quick not to approach the flags.
Good for large properties.
Good Luck

I am assuming you don't have a fence so....
Walk with your dog on a leash around the perimeter of your yard. Whenever the dog crosses off your property give the leash a slight jerk and say NO! Walk your entire property line a few times each day and that should do the trick.

He's going to be hard to retrain because of his age.

Get an "invisible fence" and dig it in at the edge of your yard. Put on the collar that shocks your dog as he approached the fence, so your dog learns to stay in your yard to avoid pain.

Or. Spend a lot of money on a tall, ugly fence at least six feet tall and made of chain link.

walk him around the perimeter and tell him no when he goes out of it and maybe give him a little tug and eventually remove the leash when he starts to get it and still walk him around the yard and when he gets close tell him no.. It will take more time at this age but not impossible. we got an older dog from someone and had to retrain her and she is great and never leaves the yard. It will take time but it should eventually sink in.

your neighbors shot your dog and you won't oput up a fence to keep your dog safe in your yard? you shouldn't be letting your dog run loose anyway.

If you don't have a fence you may want to try a long rope or leash.
