I lived in the country, with several large dogs.. My dogs were allowed to be in or out, whenever they wanted.. they choose to spend about 1/2 of the day outside, unless it was harsh weather..I had a wonderful Lab, trained by the foundation for the blind..She also liked to be outside about 1/2 of the day...Sometimes I think they just like the freedom of being a dog..
I think what makes them miserable, is to be left outside and ignored.

Ive always had Black labs in my life. Dogs are not just pets, they are a member of the family, and they deserve to be treated like a member of the family. This means with respect and understanding (to a point). Dogs are pack animals. Most are looking for a leader (you must be that leader) however while displaying dominance you must also show respect like any other decent leader. Labs also love to swim. My lab Angus even loves to jump off cliffs and tree trunks into the water after me. (Be careful as angus has tried to "rescue" me more then once when not needed!) So if you have the time take the dog to the beach and go swimming. Usually although medium sized dogs, they are (in majority) quite laid back and so do quite well in the house however they do enjoy a good run once in a while.

Ours live wherever the hell she wants to!!!
Our black lab is an inside dog. I don't think she would survive if we tried to make her an outside dog. Not because she couldn't stand up to the elements, but because she's a people person. She thrives on human contact. If we tried to put her outside, she would just up and die of loneliness.
Honestly, even with as much as she gets on my nerves, I wouldn't want her to be an outside dog. I get along better with the pup that I do with members of my human family. She's a wonderful friend and guardian for our 8 month old daughter. She'll park herself by the baby when she's sleeping and bark to let us know when she's crying. The baby simply lights up in sheer joy whenever the pup comes in the room.
She even barks to let us know when water on the stove is boiling.
She's a darn good, inside dog. I've never known another lab, or dog, really, but unless they are raised from the beginning as outside dogs, I don't think they would make it.

Indoor/outdoor dogs are the best. Depending on the size of your house though. If you have a smaller house, outdoors would keep the dog happiest. If you have a larger house, an indoor/outdoor dog, where it lives inside, but for awhile during the day you let it outside to run and play, is the best.

Labradors can live inside or out but they are large dogs so they need plenty of room. Talk with someone at your local pet store. Make great family pets.

Labrador's can live anywhere. They originally came from canada and are very good swimmers, as you know the water in canada isn't very warm so labradors have a thick coat to keep them warm when it's cold.

Dogs are pack animals. They need to be with their pack.
In this case, your family is his pack. Dogs that live in the house have a better all around personality. Just don't let him be the pack leader. Being the pack leader is your job.

Mostly, they like to stay outside because they can run around and sniff stuff. But, if you want to let it live inside, make it potty-trained, and try not to let him in your bedroom or some places where there are expensive things. Try using a gate.

I've had black labs all my life, we have always kept them as inside dogs but they also love to run.
Any dog can be an inside or outside dog if they are raised that way but I believe dogs live longer when they are raised inside.
