Also, use an enzyme-type cleaner on the spot where kitty peed. That will get rid of the scent so it won't smell like a good place to pee.

Some cats do prefer a very clean litter box but usually going outside the litter box is either a behavioral/medical problem.
It could be a number of things - seniality, stress, arthritis (trouble jumping into the litter box), etc.
I would take him into the vet just to make sure everything is ok.
Especially if he is an older guy you want to get things resolved before they get too bad.

he is trying to tell you something. Sometimes when something is wrong, like it hurts when he goes, is relating th litterbox with pain. Could be a bladder or UTI infection starting up. Sometimes they dislike the strong scent of cat litter and decide not to use it anymore. Try unscented and see. I also would get another ltter box in the house too. Some cats grow to prefef having one to pee in and one to poop in. I just found this out about my cats this past summer. After all these years, I would never have guessed. you can get the litterboxes at the dollar store for 2 dollars. I would get a rubber mat under that litterbox too. man, I know that smell. I do have a littermaid too and it works great and my boy really likes it, because it is always clean. I will say that my older cat is kind of a pig sometimes when it comes to the litter box. She got really clean about it when I put 2 of them down and she had the room to walk around and cover it.

If this is a cat over a year old, you may want to see about a vet check as he may have a urinary tract infection. Alot of cats will urinate outside of the box when they do. Another reason could be the box is dirty, even if you have just scooped it, the urine and feces smells still remain. To him it may be dirty. Make sure you take your litter box , dump out the litter at least once a week and soak it with a mixture of bleach and water. This helps to not only kill bacteria that has built up but also helps to remove the smells of urine. Make sure you rinse well and dry out. Then fill with fresh litter.
Most cats who do deficate outside of the box are either unhappy about the box or are having a medical issue which needs vet assistance.
Keep us updated on how he is doing!

Take him to a vet. Any change in behavior or bathrooming habits can mean that the pet is sick.
If you don't have a covered box, try one. It could be a case of getting too close to the edge and missing. Especially if he is getting older and can't see as well, or has a little arthritis and can't move as well. Also, older cats sometimes stop being as picky as they were before.
If you have a covered box, turn it so that the opening is in a different area, that might help. Get a different cover. One where the opening is on the long side instead of the short one, or vice versa.
Hope this helps

If the litter box isn't clean, they will do that. If the litter box IS clean, though, and it is continuous, you might check with the vet. Maybe there is some kind of urinary tract infection and that's what your cat is trying to tell you.
If it were in a different location, I'd just advise you put another box there. That happened to me. One cat decided to go consistently in the bathroom right next to the toilet. I put a litter box in there and there hasn't been a problem since.
Can you get some kind of plastic to put down there in case he does it again? That way it's just plastic to clean up and won't be in the carpet.

Last year my beautiful Manx cat Theodore went out for the evening and never came back. I love cats and the house didn't feel the same without one, so I picked up Lola from a rescue centre. She was very frightened and would pee all over the house. I found Cat Spraying No More on the internet and the techniques worked almost immediately. I haven't had a problem with Lola since. Amazing!
Can't stop your cat peeing in the house? Then worry no more...

Nope it is just one of those weird things cats do and he or she probably wont stop either. I had my cats a long time ago start that stuff and it never stopped so my only alternative was to start putting them outside. I wasn't going to keep putting up with the poop smell and cleaning it daily off the floor.

Try using clumping litter which you can scoop every few hours. The urine makes a little clump of litter that can be scooped out removing the urine. Clay litter can smell like Urine even if it looks clean.
