Most people get turned down their first time. They require a doctor evaluation also. Have you seen the SSI doctor? Don't be concerned if you get turned down. You may need to get help from an attorney who specializes in SSI disability.

Short answer: Probably, yes.
Long answer:
Social Security Administration will evaluate you 2 ways, financially and medically.
If you have a very small income and you don't own resources beyond $3000 ($2000 for an individual), you may be financially eligible. Some resources don't count such as 1 vehicle, the house you live in, equipment necessary for you to work, etc. If you are married, SSA will also consider your spouse's income and resources.
Medically, you will have to prove that, due to you disability, you unable to earn income for 12 months or more above the "substantial gainful activity" level which was set at $860/month for 2006. It will be easier to prove this if you have up-to-date medical records. If you have worked for short periods of time but haven't been able to continue because of your disability, you may still be eligible. SSA call this an Unsuccessful Work Attempt.
Your friend received what is called a Third Party Questionnaire. This is not unusual.
Here is a description of the SSI application process: http://www.ssa.gov/notices/supplemental-security-income/text-apply-ussi.htm
To get information on how to apply for benefits, go to: http://www.ssa.gov/applyfordisability/
Many people are denied on their initial application because they did not provide enough medical information. In this case, I recommend making an appeal. Here is a national list of independent living centers. A benefits advocate can be helpful. http://www.ilru.org/html/publications/directory/index.html
Also, here's a great group of people who've been through the process personally: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ssadisability/
Good luck!

You must have listed your friend on your disability report when you first applied for benefits. Part of the decision making process is the collection of information from all sources listed on that disability report, so your friend getting a questionnaire just means the SSA is working on your application and has not made a decision yet. I hope you get on benefits, I know how difficult it is to do. If you do get denied, don't give up, go back to your SSA office and apply for a hearing on the matter. It will probably take you two years to get a hearing date, but you have to request the date with in 60 days of your denial date. I hope that you just get approved this time though...Good Luck!!!

Yes you can but most people that apply unless they have a severe disabililty get denied. So be prepared to be denied the 1st time. Just go ahead and try again often the 2nd time you will be approved. they usually do ask you to have friends co workers relatives send in statements supporting that your mentall illness is severe enough that you can not function..It usually can take up to 2 yars to get approved. but you will get back payments if your approved. you might also consider having a lawyer help if you get denied. many will take your case for free and then they get a set amount when you are approved from your back pay.

SSI is very hard to get. If you have been seeing a psychologist or other mental health professional then you might have a chance. If you have no care record then you probably won't get it. It can take years to get benefits but they pay retro actively (paid from the date you filed for SSI, not the date of approval). You should seriously consider finding a company to help you through it. I used a company call Allsup. You can find them on line.

Be sure if they deny you the first time, file your appeal in the allotted time frame, if you don't, you have to start the whole process over, and your back pay will only be for that second time. It took longer than 4 months, and 1 denial for me to get mine. Just don't get discouraged, and keep a copy of all the things you send to them.

They always send paper work to your friends to determine your case. Sometimes it will take you up to four times to apply before you get ssi. They go case by case. It just depends on what you are and are not able to handle on a daily basis. Good luck.

yes you will and you don't have to do anything at the interview but tell the truth. to the exact facts. you will be asked to come in and talk with one of their shrinks and they will ask you questions and have you do some silly tests. just do your best on the tests and tell them that it runs in your family because it probably does. and most importantly BE HONEST! you dont have to make up a thing. I know all about it. trust me. only thing i only know about California. anyway they cant deny you. Just remember this, they may be able to prove someone is mentally disabled but they can not prove someone is not. and if you say you are then you are. especially if it has kept you from holding down a job tricky I know but true. at least in California.

It's likely that you will get it. Unfortunately, most people on SSI cannot live on what they pay.
What's worse is most people on SSI would be happier if they had a job they liked that's within their abilities. Since they can't get their medications paid for if they work, most can't.
