The x-rays would show degradation of the cartilage in the hip. Take your x-rays to a second doctor if you are not confident in the first one.
If there is severe degradation, you should be in lots of pain and find it hard to walk. If this is the case I would highly recommend a hip replacement. The website below lets you "try" a surgery of your own so you can understand more about it. As someone who engineers joint replacements, I recommend getting them as the technology is fairly advanced and it usually helps the pain. The second website below is the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and has several references to help find the best surgeon in your area. Good luck with everything.

I would have your doctor reccomend you to go to the Mayo Clinic, where ever you are, There are 3 of them in the states. I have congential hip displaysia in both of my hips and have to someday get them both replaced. I have been to the Mayo Clinic many times since I was 15 and now I am turning 40. I have pain daily, but am not ready to get a replacement yet, because they only last 15 years, and then you are only able to have 3 of them in your lifetime. So yes, please get a second opinion, if that does not suit you, then get a 3rd. You have to be compfortable with the doc. My surgeon is at the Mayo in Rochester,MN. I have had several hip reconstructions on both of my hips. If you would like the doctors name, I can give it to you.

Get a second opinion. If that doctor says the same thing and you're confident that they are correct, then go for it. If you need a hip replacement you are more than likely in a lot of pain, so why not fix it.

I'd get another opinion as its major surgery.
Also I would question whether the pain I have now is so bad that I'm ready to have the pain after the surgery and during the rehabilitation. A lot has to do with your age. They like to wait as long as they can to replace when it is caused by arthritis. Lots of people have hip replacment and do very well with them.

Depends on the reason. Whether the cause was traumatic or from a degenerative disease such as arthritis, it's always worth it to get second opinion. If you have been in pain for a long time, a new hip can certainly give you your live back.

Get a second opinion before going under the knife. They do some wonderful things with artificial hips these days.

The cost of Hip replacement surgery is very low in India as compared to USA,UK and Canada. You can get the surgery done there in a fraction of cost of what would you pay in USA or private UK
There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges orthopaedic surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.
I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as all surgery is not covered by insurance or by NHS in the UK.They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your hip replacement surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.
My cousin also got her hip replacement surgery for in India through the forerunners healthcare .She is more than very happy with the results. She is totally pain free now.She just paid 25% of the amount she was quoted in USA and is all praise for this forerunners healthcare company. hope this helps.

Get a 2nd and 3rd opinion. Doctors like to say that people need something (treatment, procedure, etc...) bc people believe them. Too many think that doctors are God, but they are not and they are not always right. Sorry for the hostility, but I don't always trust doctors (the American medical society should not approve of giving amphetamines to children who are hyper... that is done for their wallets...). I recommend 2 more opinions. Be careful.

First I'd get a second opinion. Then I would research doctors who performed joint replacements. Then I would have the sugery done.
If it needs replacing it will only get worse.
