The two seem vastly different to me. Priests must've been ignorant, opportunistic or evil. People died so that others could read and interpret for themselves. Doesn't anybody do it?

Doesn't anybody do what, read the Bible and decide for themselves what it's all about?
Yeah..... I did. Course I read it AFTER I stopped going to Catholic mass after 16 years. "A thorough reading and understanding of the Bible is the surest path to atheism."

the difference between them doesn't matter. neither are worthy of our attention. they are both symptomsof a much larger problem: the mindset that people have developed as a result of the culture of widespread food production. before there were excess food stores, humans did not have religious specialist, armies, etc... people were more pasturalists/ hunter gatherers, and therefore, had no time for such religious delvings. the bible, koran, and other books of organized religions are no more than a reflection of the beliefs of the rulers of the time. they have been altered and edited too many times tomention.

Jesus would never have run things as these priests have done over the years so I understand your point... But like in all things please don't lump the good ones with the bad; although I'll admit it seems there's been a higher ratio of bad...

It doesn't matter about churches or priests but what matters is Jesus because he died on the cross for our sins and has redeem us from the curse of the laws.
