Male and female dogs usually reach puberty between 6 and 12 months of age; however, the time that a dog actually breeds depends on many social factors, ranging from size of breed (larger dogs need more time before they are ready to breed) and level of confidence a dog must attain before being ready to breed.
Most breeds are seasonally monocyclic, showing signs of heat every 6 months or so. The reproductive cycle has four stages: anestrus, proestrus, estrus, and diestrus. The anestrus period lasts about 2 to 4 months. Proestrus is the time when a bloody discharge first appears in a female. This is the beginning of "heat," a period that usually last 9 days but that can last up to 28 days. The end of this period is marked by the female's acceptance of a male partner. Estrus is the period when the female is sexually receptive and breeding can occur. Ovulation occurs about 24 hours after the acceptance of the male. Ova survive and are capable of being fertilized for about 4 days after ovulation; therefore it is possible for a female to mate with more that one male. Diestrus follows estrus in the nonpregnant cycle, characterized by a state of "pseudopregnancy", which is followed by a return of the uterus and ovaries to the anestrus, resting state.
But I have known some females to mate as early as four months.....depends on the breed and all

Please do not be offended by my answer, I will assume you know nothing about breeding. I will try to help. Hopefully she is at least 2 years of age.
A dog (any breed) is in heat for approximately 21 days
As an average the first 7 to 9 days is her flirt mode, she will play, chase and allow the male to mount, but NOT breed.
The 10th to 16th day is when she will be the most receptive and fertile. She will stand still when the male mounts and allow him to breed. It is during this time that she will have the best chance to become pregnant.
For the last 6 to 8 days of her heat she will not be interested in any thing the male has to say to her, and will most likely rip his nose off if he gets too near her business end.
There are always exceptions to the above dates, don't allow your dog out of the house until at least 25 days to be sure she is totally out of heat.
NOTE the female will allow ANY male to breed her during her receptive time. Please watch her, she will be able to crawl under a 1 inch space, climb a 60 ft fence and chew through metal to get to her hearts desire.....even if it is the next door neighbors red bone hunting dog.
It is best to allow her to visit the male at least two times, with at least 24 hours between the breedings.
You will want them to be in a small area when they breed so you can semi control her movement.
You don't want her to pull the male all over a huge yard, they can be "locked" for as long as 45 minutes.
It is during the lock that the male is most susceptable to damage to his personal parts. That is why a smaller area is best.

They should be 18 months to 2 years. When they have their heat cycle, they are the most fertile on days 10-14.

A female dog is able to have her first heat cycle around 9 months, but should not be bred until she is about 2 yrs. old. They are capable of mating as soon as they experience their first heat, but it is not healthy for the dog to get pregnant that young.

There are WAY too many homeless pets out there as it is. Spay your pet. Besides spaying early will help extend her life span.
