A good question - and I will give you the Official Army Answer, which is obtained in Army Regulation 670-1, dated 5 September 2003.

Your question is answered in Paragraph 1-8. And I don't think you are going to like the answer. It doesn't specifically give any length, but it does state that it cannot interfere with the wear of headgear. The first sentence of 1-8,a. (1), (a) however, is the most important to answering your question: "Leaders will judge the appropriateness of a particular hairstyle by the appear of headgear when worn.

In 1-8,a.(1),(b) it further states "Extreme, eccentric or trendy haircuts are not authorized.

As a former commander of a Reception Company, and an Adjutant General Corps Officer - I can tell you, your commander is the one who makes these decisions, so it is up to Him or Her, and the regulation is written that way purposely. You have no recourse except to conform to what you are directed.

If you have desires to be a member of the military - you might want to stop bucking the system. If you are told your hair does not meet the standards, comply and get it fixed. Otherwise, you may want to consider another profession... and I assume that since you are ROTC that you are desiring to become an officer.

As an officer - you will be expected to set the standard, which means there must never be any question that your hair is meeting standards. If you can't set the example - someone like me will be bringing you in my office for a heart to heart chat, and if that doesn't work - we will send you home.

Having a short hair is really a need for them because the authority and the bravery show forth with this standard hair length.

Neatly trimmed makes the man of the USA army more a better look than having a hair that has a length of the women that has a length of 3 feet to four feet.

What will happened if a man that is inside the army have a long hair? For sure they are look like women and the distinction between a girl from a woman will never noticed.

The United States Marine Corps has a specific length guideline:
Men's Hair. Men's hair shall be zero to three inches in length (zero at the collar and three on top) with no eccentricities. No beards are permitted. Mustaches will be neatly trimmed.

Looking for something that pertains more directly to Army ROTC we don't see specific measurements indicated:
Male haircuts. The hair will not be excessive or present an unkempt appearance. It will present a tapered look. When combed, it will not fall over the ears or eyebrows or touch the collar except for the closely cut neck hair.

Basically you just dont want to look like a slob....

It has to be clean cut, not interfer with headgear, and not touch the collar. Also sideburns have to stop at the start of the ear lobe but to play it safe I would make sure they were a little higher and make sure they so not flare out....

Most men in the Army just go with the high and tight. Its you best bet to make sure no one can question if you are within regs or not.

the hair cannot hang over the eyebrows or over the ears. There is no mention of linear measure in AR 670-1. The hair must also maintain a tapered appearance.

It's all simply a matter of personal preference. I have short hair and guys just like it. And i prefer a person with short hair over a person with long hair because long tresses tends to make guys look also girly.

Most military programs allow up to 3 inches, but it must be professional, tapered and trimmed on the sides with no side burns.

Most soldiers in the army that I know get what is called a "High Fade". To let you know, that is pretty short. It is the haircut that most people associate with soldiers.

Just want to add my two cents in. Side burns are allowed as long as it does not exceed the lowest part of your external ear opening.
