I hope this doesnt sound like a silly question, but I have always seen baseball players do the sign of the cross and several other people do it, but I would like to know what it means. I am not catholic so I dont know this. Appreciate your help.

I open my hand and touch my brow, and say,
"In the name of the Father"

Then I touch my heart with my hand, and say,
"and of the Son."

I touch my shoulders left and right, and say,
"and of the Holy Spirit"

I say,
"Amen."

The prayer of the Sign of the Cross is
- A statement of belief in the Holy Trinity
- A statement of belief in and thanksgiving for Jesus' sacrifice on the Cross
- God blessing us
- Us Blessing God ("I will bless the Lord at all times")
- A prayer using your entire body
- A Bible quote (Matthew 28:19)

With love in Christ.

It is a ritualistic custom used to symbolize and formalize a request or message to God. The four positions traditionally stand for...

1. Father
2. Son
3. Holy Spirit
4. Amen ("so be it")

Peace

I'm sure there are far better explanations than this, but my mother used to tell me that making the sign of the cross was an outward gesture of our identification with Christ. It's a public symbol that we believe in Jesus Christ as the Savior of mankind, and that we believe in the Trinity (Father, Son and the Holy Ghost).

.The Sign of the Cross expresses blessing. It symbolizes God blessing us, God embracing us with blessings. And in this same sign we express our belief in God from whom all our blessings flow. In the Sign of the Cross we embrace our good God with mind and heart and all of our strength.

With the Sign of the Cross we recall in particular the blessing of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We trace a cross on ourselves, the cross of Jesus. His death on the Cross was an outpouring of love for us. The Sign of the Cross is a reminder of his love, a love found not only in the past, but here and now, as we make this sign upon ourselves; for the love of Jesus Christ abides forever.
