My cat's acne on her chin has gotten worse since we've been treating it. The vet told us to scrub it with a medicated shampoo and then just wipe it with a dry cotton ball. Isn't that probably painful for the kitty to have medicated shampoo just sitting on her acne chin all night? I'm wondering if my vet is on crack. Her chin looks far worse than when we took her to the vet.

I worked at a vet for 7 years, and her recommendation is to take away alllll plastic eating and drinking bowls. Some cats are allergic to plasic. And the shampoo may be irritating it. Cats have a different ph than humans. If she were mine I would make sure she is eating/drinking from glass or stainless steel bowls, and stop the shampoo. I would just clean the area with a warm wet wash cloth twice a day (don't rub too hard) and dry the area, maybe even apply a small amout of antibacterial ointment to the affected area twice daily as well. I hope this helps.

Do you know what is causing the acne? Perhaps it is a food allergy try gradually switching her diet to Wellness brand cat food that is 100% all natural. Also there is a gel that may help but it is made for eczema, wouldn't hurt to try NaturVet Aloe-Comfrey Gel. Also, when your cat finishes eating be sure to wipe her chin with a soothing wipe that is medicated for allergies.(Simple Solution Allergy Relief) These can be found at http://www.petfooddirect.com

But by all means get a second opinion from another vet and see what he has to say. Make sure you tell him of the regimen that the first vet put him on and results there after.

Good luck and I hope that your =^.^= feels better soon!

You can use the medicated shampoo, but need to rinse it off. It shouldn't be painful unless the area is raw. You can also use Stridex acne pads daily to clean the area. If your cat is eating or drinking out of a plastic dish, change it to stainless steel. A lot of cats get chin acne allergy from plastic.
