In a word - no.
One of the reasons is because the government has no incentive to save money or to spend less money.
And the politicians don't do anything to help the situation. Back in 1994 when Republicans were trying to control the growth of spending - i.e. instead of increasing spending on something 4% next year, we'll increase it by 2% - and the Democrats screamed bloody murder saying that they were "cutting" the programs - even though they were still increasing spending - just not as much.
Not that I think that Republicans (I am one) are doing much better. Government spending has shot up dramatically the longer Republicans have controlled the House, Senate and White House. While I like Bush as President - he hasn't done anything to stop the madness either (like vetoing outrageous spending bills).
Government agencies have no incentive to save money. Their budgets for the future year are based upon their budget for the present year. And if they don't use all the money in the budget - then their budgets are cut. And nobody likes getting their budget cut.
I live on an Air Force base in Japan, and I've seen several examples of wasteful spending. One example - a pallet full of perfectly good window air conditioning units being thrown out because they didn't have remote controls. A friend of mine had a perfect good - beautiful solid wood desk got thrown out because his office had money left to spend at the end of the year, so they bought new office furniture - and just threw out the old stuff.

Our government easily wastes/squanders $250-350 billion every year (like a leaking supertanker). Besides that, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid alone will bankrupt us in the future.
Politicians have this insatiable appetite for taxpayer cash. Notice, D.C. spending has never subsided one iota, hence, the deficits are back. Tax receipts are way up (>10%) and they still outspend the increases in revenues.
It is time to hold a Congressional "blanket party" and teach these jackasses that they are playing games with hard-earned money that we could better use to fund our lives.

A big fat NO!
but even without ANY taxes of ANY kind, there would still be unhappy people. Money and happiness are not the same. And there is no such thing as a perfect system.

A perfect system doesn't exist. In fact it is theoretically unachieveable because there are like 290 million Americans...if one lone crazed dude is unhappy, just one, your sociological model is blown...so that's life that's what all the people say...

In every government there will be waste, no matter what system of government is used. Waste can't be helped but corruption is the real issue, when that wasted money goes to 'friends or relatives or special interest groups' that is corruption and that is what people don't like.

Not when you take them to war for no real reason. That is only part of the cost as over 2600 of our guy's and 10's of thousands of Iraqi had died for the same no real good reason.

NO ! Did you know that last year alone there were nearly 14,000 "pork barrel" projects inserted into legislation? Every congressperson or senator wants his/her share of the pie. Unfortunately many voters reward them for bringing home "goodies" to their district. It's totally out of control !

I think the taxes are used very unwisely indeed.
I was a government auditor for years. I KNOW that money isn't managed well.
