The question you have asked is one of the most important in the history of philosophy and science. There are a variety of thoughts on this "mind-body" problem. You might be interested in the works of Descartes, then Spinoza, Leibnitz and more modern writers like Bertran Russell and John Searle. Basically, it is either totally in your brain or it exists elsewhere and is grounded in the brain. Or it could be in the back of that dude's truck.
