Yes, christians are upset because this puts questions on their beliefs that they cannot answer in a logical or scientific way.
Evolution, to the responder above, has never stated that apes directly evolved into humans. You are thinking in a linear fashion. We have a common ancestor is different than apes begat humans.
To the other responder, THEORY, is a collection of facts which supports a natural phenomenon. Relativity and gravity are both theories, but they definitely exist.
I can give you an evolutionary change. A tadpole to a frog. Yes, it is micro evolution. But if you have one then you must have the other....macro evolution. If you can see a small change over a small amount of period of time, then what can happen over millions of years or thousands of years......large changes...macro evolution.
Yes, we cant see it, because it happens over such a great amout of time. We cant see gravity, but we know it exists.

As I recall, Charles Darwin's father was a Christian minister. I don't recall ever hearing that Charles shared his father's faith.
Evolution has no business being called a theory. I don't know the technical or scientific definition, but I do know that a theory is one step up from being a thesis. And I know that it must be backed up with scientific experiments where others get results similar or identical to the first scientist who performed them.
Scientific method requires observation of a phenomenon, developing a thesis as to how it works or what will happen in a given set of circumstances, developing and conducting controlled experiments to test the thesis, then observing the results and determining whether they prove or disprove the thesis.
There were (and are) no experiments that Mr. Darwin could have performed. Therefore all he did was observe animals living (in the Galapagos), then used his imagination to come up with his thesis as to how they developed into the kind of animals they were. But he couldn't prove it using scientific methods.
Evolutionists and Creationists are observing the same evidence - fossils - and interpreting them by their preferred belief systems. There is no scientific experiment either can perform to prove their viewpoint. It's entirely a faith issue.

For some reason I've never been able to fathom, many people are frightened at the prospect of being related to monkeys, no matter how distant the relationship. Evolution is a fact. Period. We can easily observe this in the animal world, including humans. I am a Christian who believes in the Bible, and I see no inconsistencies between the Bible and science. My first question to those who say, "The world was created in six days, it says so in the Bible", is how dare you limit God to a 24 hour day! It is written in the Bible that a man's life is but a blink of God's eye, meaning that 75 years or 950, as the case may be, is a couple of milliseconds of time to God. Figure it out, people. One second of God's time is equal to 100,000 years of our time. I won't bother putting the pencil to it, but I'd bet that six days is worth around three or four billion years. Ignorance is a terrible thing.
Late note: Did someone steal one of our planets when I wasn't looking, or is someone referring to the "new" definition of what we'll call a planet now? Good grief!

To expand on what justmemimi posted, it is a hushed fact, and can be verfied on the right path of research, that Darwin recanted his theory of evolution shortly before his death. He did indeed become a Christian and realized the truth of the Word of God, the Holy Bible, that God created man in His image, and God is NOT a monkey. The evidence of creationism far outweighs any misguided attempts of atheistic scientists and their followers to refute it. Further, man has not been on the earth nearly as long as they would have you believe. Only a few thousand years, not millions. Unbelievers desperately want to believe that there is no creator, so therfore there will be no accountability to a higher power for their actions/lifestlye here on earth. As far as Christians being labeled as unintelligent, or aggressive against the theory of evolution, yes, when you are armed with the truth, and have been totally liberated by it, you want others to not be misinformed and to share in the glorious knowledge that you have. It's not a personal attack, as you like to slanderously label it, it is a spiritual battle with the one behind all lies, Satan. He wants you to believe your so-called intelligence and your good works is the be-all, end-all in your life. Not so, what do you unbelievers have to lose? Just your soul, and an eternity as far away from paradise as the east is from the west. Here's a challenge for you staunch atheists: Call out to God, ask Him if He's real, to reveal Himself to you, and to change your mindset and your heart, and ask in the name of the Son, Jesus Christ. Also, you have to be sincere, and not cynnical and sarcastic. God judges the heart, and knows if your real or not. You'll be transformed, guaranteed. God bless.

Some people would rather come from dirt than primates.
Natural selection is not enough to explain the known data about evolution, so the debate about mechanisms (theory) still goes on. Although this does not effect the facts of evolution as such, this is the fodder misguided creationists (is that redundant) use to attack the science. To me one either embraces science or they don't, but the Christians cherry pick both science and the Bible; so sad.

I am a Christian and I have nothing against Charles Darwin. I do believe, however, if he was alive today he would debunk his own theory. He based his claims on future scientists being able to provide absolute proof. They have not done so. The people I have a problem with are the contemporaries of Charles Darwin who took his theory and promoted it because to them it meant: no creation - no God, allowing them to pursue their promiscuous sexual life styles. Consequently, you have the same type of unrealistic thinking going on today by not allowing Creationism to be taught even as a theory and teaching Darwinism as a fact.

I think it's an interesting concept, but I take personal offense at being a Monkey's Nephew. I think I come from better stock that that!
How did the theory get to be a cornerstone of biology?
NO ONE has EVER documented an evolutionary change.
Viruses change, such as BIRD flu, but SCIENCE calls that MUTATION, not evolution!
Why doesn't science call that EVOLUTION?
Why is Science so afraid to tag a true "change" with the term evolution!
Could it be science is as hesitant as religious people are to give that kind of change credibiltiy!
Science is spineless. They don't want to call Pluto a planet anymore.
The don't want to call BIRD FLU that jumps to HUMANS evolution.
They call it MUTATION.
How PC.
What, exactly, has EVOLVED? Give me ONE DOCUMENTED SPECIES!
Just one!
Show me HOW it evolved!
Pick on animal, one single cell entitity, one bird and SHOW ME the actual genetical evolutionary steps.
SHow it to me.
Gene by gene.
Change by change.
I want to see the DOMINO theory put in to practice!
I want to see the DNA smears as they change from X0 ~ XNth
NO ONE can do that!
Evolution does not exsit, except in the theoritical mind.
It is a LEAP OF FAITH.
In Cosmology Big Bang is one corner and Steady State is another!
No one can document BIOLOGICAL EVOLUTION
They CAN document BIOLIGICAL MUTATION
So why not call it's DArwins Theory of Mutation!
Because then WE'D be MUTANTS!
I defy ONE scientist, ONE Atheist, ONE agnostic to lead me to a web site that shows, bit by bit the DNA of one SPECIES turning into ANOTHER SPEICES.
IT does NOT exist.
Maybe in 500,000 years we might see it, but NOT today!

When I was in school, the science teacher before saying anything in regards to the Darwin theory, would tell us that those who wished to leave the class, could. He added that he meant no offense to anyone.. We all stayed.
It was a matter of respect to us, to our parents, and our beliefs..
Science proved we had 9 planets.. now we have only 8
Science proved alot of things, only to take back what they thought was right..at the time.

People who believe in Darwin lack stability and are mentally confused. If it's not about religion than it was used to degrade Africans and Afro-Americans which it racism. Are u an racist? Darwin was and he was also an atheist at that time. Why should Christians trust an atheist's theory that doesn't credit God but rejects God? Darwin is not to be worshiped but atheists do worship him. Evolution is not complete and is non-absolute. If you want ur ancestors to be apes that's your choice. God created Biology but man doesn't give that credit to him totally.

As a very young child, I remember watching the movie with Spencer Tracey called "Inherit the Wind." It's a wonderful portrayal of the ape trials. The conclusion of this movie was that, to God, one day could have been millions of years.
With God, all things are possible, and God created all things, including Charles Darwin. I think of evolution as God's instrument in creation. Our scientists have figured out many things, but not all things. God reveals to us what we are ready to understand.
