"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy...Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

We use the term terrorism very light today - but we need to understand what terrorism really means - anyone who causes fear is a terrorist! Thus warfare also causes people to fear - so it's a no-win situation! Also, there are many forms of terrorism - subsequently if you play the fear factor on a nation - which almost all leaders do in the whole wide world to gain power then all leaders of the world are terrorist by this account and have no right to use warfare period. There are several "terrorist" leaders in the world today - does this mean we go to war with all of them. Even our own government is using "fear" as a political tactic and sooner or later this will go too far and will have grave consequences for mankind. Remember over history war has seldom been fought for what "Joe Public" believed - there has always been some other agenda behind warfare!

No.
Terrorism can be reduced by effective counter terrorism.
If they knock a building down, you knock a city or country down.
That's what Bush did.
They knocked down a building.
He knocked down a Nation.
Now the terrorists have to spread themselves thin.
If we were to, say, for example, knock down the ENTIRE Middle East, except for Israel, and say this is because of terrorism. It would have an effect.
Not forever, but for a while.
If we were to systematically BOMB every MOSQUE in the world until SOMEONE deliver Osama's head to us on a platter, we would eventually see Osams's severed head.
That wouldn't stop terrorism, but it would make them think.
IF we were to bomb Mecca, block by block, until Osama was killed and delviered to us or Islamics stopped making these videos, they would eventually stop or their OWN people would go after them.
We do not do that, however.
We are PC.
As a result of this weakness Terrorism continues.
If we became total RACISTs and forbid any Islmaic from boarding an airplane or immigrating outside of the Middle East, it would have an effect.
We don't do that.
Terrorists amount of 1 or 2% of Islam and are SO effective the other 98% is hesitant to go AGAINST THEM.
England could have ended the conflict in Northern Ireland by declaring that ALL Cathoics are outlaws and should be SHOT ON SIGHT.
That would have ended it.
But England, like the US, doesn't do that.
Islamic Terrorist will KILL everyone who doesn't convert.
One day the world will get fed up this this and declare GENOICIDE on ISLAM, on that day, terrorims will go very deeply underground.
On the day we EXECUTE every RAG HEAD in the world, for no reason and inavade the Middle East with 1 billion soliders and take the Oil Fields away from the Sheiks, Terrorism will subside for a while.
Short of that it will not happen and THEY are counting on this.
The only way to defeat Islamic terrorism is to shrink their numbers from 1 billoin to 1 thousand.
Then you end it.
But that is Genocide and we look like Adolph Hilter.

It's a complicated thing. Cause terrorism is driven by hate and disillusionment. How do you fight those things? I mean you can kill all the terrorist, but the factors that created the terrorist are still there.
Also some of this hatred is over 2000 years in the making. There's no pretty solution. The more you fight it the more you rally people locally and regionally to its cause. You have to win the people's "hearts and minds". No easy task.
That would be my thought, the local people have to want people to come remove terrorist from their region.

Sad but true the answer is no...Warfare only kills and destroys
causing everything the aggressors don't really want as a goal...
It is born of ignorance .... those under siege are evoked to return more of the same out of self- defense however killing men even in justifiable self-defense won't change the battle ground of ideology be it specious by intent or sheer ignorance on the grand scale of present day society self -defense only buys temporary limited protection and time to negotiate for a lasting truth peace-out !

No I don't think so. As long as there are extremists out there, there will always be terrorism. They believe so whole heartily in what they are taught and really believe they are doing it for the greater good. I think that that is an oxymoron. The greater good and terrorism. I could be wrong but I don't think so.

I'm not sure.
I heard George W. comment early on in the Iraqi War that this "War on Terrorism" will last from generation to generation because people will always teach their children to hate. What a vicious cycle.

Just before World War I, there were a number of terrorist attacks on the United States forces in the Philippines by Muslim extremists. So General Pershing captured 50 terrorists, and had them tied to posts for execution. He then had his men bring in two pigs and slaughter them in front of the, now horrified, terrorists.
Muslims detest pork, because they believe pigs are filthy animals. Some of them simply refuse to eat it, while others won't even touch pigs at all, nor any of their by-products. To them, eating or touching a pig, its meat, its blood, etc., is to be instantly barred from Paradise (and those virgins), and doomed to hell.
The soldiers then soaked their bullets in the pigs' blood, and proceeded to execute 49 of the terrorists by firing squad. The soldiers then dug a big hole, dumped in the terrorist's bodies, and covered them in pig blood, entrails, etc. They let the 50th man go.
And for the next 42 years, there was not a single Muslim extremist attack anywhere in the world.
Maybe it is time for this segment of history to repeat itself, maybe in Iraq? The question is, where do we find another Black Jack Pershing?

It can be damaged no doubt about that by military operations. But the reason why we dont have a terrorism problem is because....
A. Our government renounces it.
B. We have a strong police force and inteligence sector that are not corrupted by them.

certainly not by going in and destroying an entire country!! we all saw how that ends up!!
back in the early 90s Egypt had many terrorist cells doing terrorist attacks. it took the country less than 3 years to totally crush them.
all the terrorists were imprisoned, killed or fled the country.
