Corrupted files or If the game you're trying to play was created back in the day, then it most probably will not work. Those were designed to play under MS-DOS as an OS and not under MS-DOS as an application.

MS-DOS has very different algorithms than that of Windows. Especially a very modern version in Windows XP.

This error occurres, if you start a DOS program while Windows is running. You need DOS for running this program. Windows XP has no DOS! The last Windows Version with full DOS is Windows 98. The DOS program never works on Windows XP.

If it is a MS-DOS game then right click on the icon. You should see a compatibility tab. Click on it and run it in Windows 95 mode.
