Get some laxaire or other hair ball gel and put it on the cat's paws or in its food. The cat will lick it off its paws and food and this will help with the hairballs. They also make food that is especially made for hairballs. The food has a certain composition to it, to help reduce the cat from getting hairballs. You also need to make sure you keep on top of brushing your cat out or you could also get the cat shaved. You can also ask your vet and they will have more options for you.

You need to regularly brush/groom your pet year round. There are a variety of brushes on the market so you may have to try different ones to see what works well and what your cat will like. Be sure to not brush too hard or you will make the experience unpleasant.
There are various products on the market, such as Nutrical, that your vet or pet store will carry to help prevent fur balls. They tend to have a flavoring that a lot of cats like. If you don't want to pay that much for the product or your pet isn't as picky about the flavor you can use plain old Vaseline. Smear some on your cat's front paws (not so much that he/she can sling it off if when shaking their paw). One of my cats just loves Vaseline so I give it to her as a "treat" every night and she'll lick it off of my finger.
You might also want to check into changing your cat's food. There are some brands that carry foods targeted for cats with hairball problems. They may cost a little more but will certainly make your pet more comfortable. If you do change be sure to introduce the new food over the course of a week to 10 days. Continue to give the current food but mix it with the new food, gradually changing the quantity of each so that at the end of the time period the cat is completely on the new food.

TRY FEEDING YOUR CAT MARGARINE,PUT SOME ON YOUR FINGER,AND SEE IF HE WILL LICK IT OFF,IF THAT DOESN'T WORK PUT A SMALL AMOUNT ON HIS NOSE,(CATS BEING CLEAN FREAKS,HE MAY LICK IT OFF HIS NOSE.) ALSO TO HELP WITH HAIRBALLS BRUSH HIM REGULARLY,AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK,USE A SOFT BRUSH DESIGNED FOR CATS. IF THE MARGARINE DOSEN'T WORK,TRY A COMMERCIAL HAIRBALL REMEDY,YOU CAN GET THEM AT PET SMART,PETCO,ETC. BUT TRY THE MARGARINE FIRST,IT'S CHEAPER.IF NONE OF THIS WORKS TALK TO YOUR CAT'S VET BECAUSE HAIRBALLS CAN BUILD UP IN YOUR CAT'S STOMACH AND MAKE HIM VERY ILL,MAYBE EVEN KILL HIM,WHEN IT GETS TO THAT POINT THE ONLY WAY I KNOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS SURGERY(VERY EXPENSIVE)I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE,IVE HAD CATS FOR 30 YEARS. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR CAT'S PROBLEM.

When it's coughing, throw something at it like an ashtray or a beer. Try to scare it as bad as possible. The hairball will come right out.

Go get some hairball preparation from the pet store and stick it on her paw. It comes in fish flavor and she will lick it off. If you can't do that, put some Vaseline on her paw. They both hlep them pass furballs.

Brush the cat daily, to cut down on loose hair. Longhairs need it.
