pop the blisters, very carefully, using a tissue and making sure not to let any of the liquid touch anything else, espcially anywhere near your eye. that liquid is teeming with the virus and is very contagious at this point in the infection. then, leave it alone, blotting liquid away as needed. the sore will heal best when left dry. also take l-lysine 1000mg a day until it goes away and then 500-1000mg as needed thereafter when you feel a cold sore soming on (any part of your lip feels tingly or itchy). after i started taking the l-lysine, i've had one cold sore in the last 2 1/2 years.

abreva is the same as doing nothing at all in my experience. same with zovirax or valtrex- studies have shown they don't decrease the time period of the sore at all.

and...bactrim will do nothing, nor will any other antibiotic, as they only work against bacteria and HSV is a virus.

Unfortunately there is no quick cure for a cold sore. It is caused by a virus. HSV. There are some new medications that if you take a the very FIRST sigh of a blister that will shorten the length of the outbreak. The other over the counter medications mostly treat symptoms. You have to catch it before it becomes a blister or sore to make it heal faster. You do not want to pop them. Just wash and dry the area and apply the medication that soothes the pain the best for you. Important to wash hands. This type of virus is very contagious. Hope you get some relief soon. They are very painful.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).

Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.

The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid?such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

1> do not pop/pick it

2> keep it clean and do not touch it

3> buy some ABREVA and put it on the sore

4> wash your hands after appying the abreva

5> when you don't have a break-out keep your lips moist with some type of lip balm - I've found that Medicated Chapstick works very well

6> when you do have an out-break do not kiss anyone, give head.... you can transfer the virus to anything that comes in contact with it.

7> consume foods high in L-Lysine (an amino acid that can help to suppress the herpies virus); milk and eggs are good choices. You may also want to buy a limp-balm that has Lysine in it.

8> stay away from foods high in L-Arginine (an amino acid the herpies virus requires to multiply; chocolate, peanuts, whole-wheat products. I have found that cutting out peanut butter made a big difference, but I still eat whole-wheat bread and whole-wheat pasta.

The cold sore is from the herpes virus so it can be shared. The canker sore can be the result of several things, a small cut to the mouth, eating too many acidic foods or from a virus. If you have multiple sores in the mouth or throat this is a good sign it is a virus. If is sore is viral then that can be transmitted.
