The Old Testaments leads up to the new testament, the prophecies of Daniel co-incide with the prophecies of Revelation, and many other books predicted Jesus (even Genesis; 3:15).
The Tabernacle build by moses was designed after the one in Heaven, and represents Christs ministry, Baptism, Sacrifice, Holy, most Holy. Not to mention the commandments were kept under the seat of God, this shows the commandments were not done away with but are still to be followed today, even the 4th commandment.

Because SOOOOOOO much of it prefigures the New Testament.....for example Melchisedech offered a sacrafice with bread and wine the same way that Jesus did in the Last Supper. Also Eve brought sin into the world and Mary brought Salvation into the world. Mary is called the Second Eve. And you can find out by reading the Old Testament the Jesus fulfilled the prophesies of the Old Testament.

Genesis - The historical accounts of creation, the first sin which set into motion the redemption of man, the flood and beginnings of the Jewish nation.
Exodus - The historical account of the Jewish nation being freed by God from slavery. The giving of the law. The Jewish nation wanders in the wilderness because of unbelief.
Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy - The giving of the law. The law revealed who we really are as sinners. The sacrificial system was a foreshadowing of Christ's sacrifice.
Joshua through Ezra - The historical account of Israel, its rising and falling. The division of the kingdom. Many great men and women of faith contained in these writings. Reveals the hand of God protecting and guiding the faithful Jews.
Job - Contains the struggle of a man, who though faithful, suffered greatly and remained faithful. God reveals Himself powerfully.
Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes - Poetry, prophecy, precepts for living.
Song of Solomon - a typology of Christs love for His people.
The Prophets - Prophecies fulfilled concerning Israel, their enemies and Christ Himself.
This is only a thumbnail sketch of the riches of the Old Testament. Jesus quoted from it often, as did Paul and the other New Testament writers. The question is, why not study the Old Testament?

I once thought the same thing until I started a study on Genesis and the Patriarchs, after reading this I felt such a desire to really study God's word more in depth, the reason for this is because that section of the Bible tells us the History of why our world is the way it is today, it goes over the tribes of Israel and why there is tension in the Middle East even today. If you continue throughout the Bible you will read the History that explains why things are as they are today, you will see passages of hope and comfort, passages of phrophecy and prophecy fullfillment, and we live in the time when these things are coming to be, it helps solidify that God's word is true, no man that truly studies it and truly understands it could deny the truth in it, there is no fault in it at all. I hope you do give it a chance as I did, it makes me feel so special to know the God of Abraham is my God, He never changes and always loves and knew of us before we were even born.

Don't bother. Notice that people get worked up over the Old Testament much more than the New Testament.....it's difficult to interpret for everyone. It's not to be taken literally AT ALL. All these crazy ideas and stories (the world is 6000 years old) are from the OT. The NT is the only one you need...the OT is more for stories and glorying God. lol If we took the OT literally, as the fundis try to, we would be stoning more than 3/4 of the world and cutting off hands and feet, and having slaves and other crazy ideas.

If you read the new testament ...... you are primarily reading the old testament. I forget the percentage, but it is over 50% of the new testament is direct quotations from the old.
And besides Jesus used nothing but the old testament for all of HIs teachings.

If not for the old testament, how would you know that the one they nailed to the cross was Jesus? And those prophets also tell about what to expect in the end times. Jesus said I came not to destroy the old, but to fullfill, the prophets of the old testament were telling about a saviour, that was to take away our sin, when christ came and was nailed to the cross the old was fullfilled, not destroyed.

Why, indeed, it is brutal vicous and bloodthirsty mythology. I am in good company about many things in the new testment also:
And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerve in the brain of Jupiter.

You can't read one and not the other, one leads up to the next. Also i believe there is a lot of valuable info in the old testament. Especially leviticus regarding God's laws for various things. I think they still ring true today and he was right on, regarding what we should eat etc etc

Only after you have the New Testament down cold.
We are in the New Testament.
After knowing the New you can see how the Old relates.
