and began opening her eyes today. what does this all mean? her infectious disease doctor also put her on different antibiotics

I am a Dialysis Tech. and don't you worry. The Doctor is doing the right thing. As the nurse said your mom has become septic in the blood stream and our kidneys flush out all the poisions and waste products. Her kidneys are not functioning correctly and Dialysis is the best thing for her with the aide of antibiotics. Just because she is on Dialysis now does not mean she will have to be the rest of her life. She can get normal kidney function back again. Dialysis pulls your blood through the dialyser cleans it and returns it back to you and it pulls fluid off of you. That is the simplest way I know how to explain it to you. Just pray and believe and the Lord will deliver you and your family out of this devastating time. I'll be praying for you.

I'm a registered nurse in a hospital. Sepsis is and infection that travels in the blood stream ans effects various organs in the body. They placed your mother on dialysis because it has effected your mom's kidneys and she would become more septic without the dialysis. Our kidneys flush out the toxins in our body. The doctors placed her a different antibiotics because her blood cultures, urine cultures, stool cultures and / or if she has a wound or abscess in her body that culture and the infectious decease doctor receive the lab results fro those cultures and what ever infection your mom has, it was resistant to certain antibiotic. So they changed the to what would help her best to clear the infection. I hope your mom will be better soon. My prayers are with her, you and your family doing this difficult time.

If she's opening her eyes after a period or time where she hadn't been, that's definitely a good sign. Hopefully, the dialysis is just temporary until she's over the infection. But, even if she has permanant kidney damange, people can live a long time on dialysis.

This is a better sign. I have a co-worker that has been on dialysis for over 20 years. He goes once a week.

She will be okay... the dialysis will make her feel better by cleaning her blood for her and the antibotics will clear up any infection that she may have. Just go see her and tell her you love her and are waiting for her to come home so she can watch tv with you!

Sweetheart, you should talk to the nurses on that floor and ask them to contact a social worker at the hospital to come and talk to you. All hospitals have people on staff to help explain things to the family members. The doctors might not have a lot of time to talk with you, but the social worker there will take plenty of time, if you tell them how confused and concerned you are. If you can't go to the hospital, then call them on the phone. They can help you.

Sorry for the tough time you are having right now. I'm glad to see that her doctors caught the infection in time. It sounds like she is improving. Her doctors should fill you in on her status. If you don't see them, then ask her nurses if they could let you know how she is doing.

Hey girl just hold on. And pray. With time and pary(Ing) things will get better. I went thorugh the same thing this time last year w/ my g/ma. Your mom opening her eyes is a good sign. Keep your couage up. Things will get better.
